Despite significant advances during the satellite era, the monitoring of the mass changes of glaciers is still hampered by a fragmented coverage of remote sensing estimations and a poor constraint of the errors in related assessments. In this thesis, we present a globally complete and resolved estimate of glacier mass changes by spatiotemporal analysis of digital elevation models. We first develop methods based on spatiotemporal statistics to assess the accuracy and precision of digital elevation models, and to estimate time series of glacier surface elevation. In particular, we introduce a non-stationary spatial framework to estimate and propagate multi-scale spatial correlations in uncertainties of geospatial estimates. We then massively generate digital elevation models from two decades of stereo optical archives covering glaciers worldwide. From those, we estimate time series of surface elevation for all of Earth's glaciers at a resolution of 100 m during 2000-2019. Integrating these time series into volume and mass changes, we identify a significant acceleration of global glacier mass loss, as well as regionally contrasted responses that mirror decadal changes in climatic conditions. Using a large amount of independent, high-precision data, we demonstrate the validity of our analysis to yield reliable and consistent uncertainties at different scales of the spatiotemporal structure of our estimates. We expect our methods to foster robust spatiotemporal analyses, in to identify sources of biases and uncertainties in geospatial assessments. Furthermore, we anticipate our estimates to advance the understanding of the drivers that govern glacier change, and to extend our capabilities of predicting these changes at all scales. Such predictions are critically needed to design adaptive policies on the mitigation of cryospheric impacts in the context of climate change. Note de contenu : General introduction

[Termes IGN] système d'extensionRésumé : (auteur) Safety-critical navigation applications require that estimation errors be reliably quantified and bounded. Over the last decade, significant effort has been put to guarantee a bounded position estimation by using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) by means of satellite-based or ground-based augmentation systems (SBAS, GBAS) and Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (ARAIM) for aviation. This has been achieved by carefully designing models that overbound the different residual error components in range measurements (e.g., satellite clock and orbit, tropospheric and multipath among others). On the other hand, and as part of Aircraft based Augmentation Systems (ABAS), the use of Inertial Reference Systems (IRS) has been traditionally included as additional source of redundant navigation information. More recently, the use of Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) with a wider spectrum of possible inertial sensor qualities in tighter integration with single-frequency GNSS has seen its way in a new Minimum Operational Performance Standard (MOPS). New GNSS/INS systems and standards could still benefit from the methodologies and aspects developed for future dual-frequency/multiconstellation GNSS standards. However, safety-related GNSS systems like ARAIM are snapshot-based, that is, the position estimation is performed independently at every epoch, whereas GNSS/INS systems are typically based on Kalman filtering (KF).
Therefore, the existing error overbounding models and methodologies are not enough to produce a robust KF position estimation since the impact of time-correlation in measurements must also be accounted for. Moreover, it has been observed that the time-correlation of different GNSS errors presents also some level of uncertain behavior, which makes very challenging for linear dynamic systems to produce a guaranteed solution. As proposed by GNSS Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS), there are sources of time-correlated errors that can be well modelled using a first order Gauss-Markov process (GMP). Using this GMP parametric model, it is possible to capture the uncertain timecorrelated nature of error processes by allowing the variance and time correlation constant of the GMP model to be in a bounded range. Under this situation, the first part of this thesis studies the propagation of the uncertain models through the Kalman filter estimation and provides new theoretical tools in time and frequency domain to bound the KF error estimation covariance. As a result, tight stationary bounding models on the GMP uncertain processes are derived in both continuous and discrete time domain. This is extended to non-stationary models that provide tighter error bounding during an initial transient phase when measurements are first introduced (which will be relevant in scenarios with changing number of visible satellites). The new models can very easily be used during the KF implementation which might be very attractive by regulators and designers. In the second part of the thesis, the new overbounding GMP models are applied for a dual-frequency GPS-Galileo tightly-coupled GNSS/INS integration. The design of the filter and of error models is performed following compatibility with current aviation standards and ARAIM Working Group C results. The impact of the use of the new models is analysed in terms of conservativeness, integrity and continuity based on realistic operational simulations linked to airport runways. The benefit of an overbounded GNSS/INS solution is also compared with the current baseline ARAIM algorithm solution. This thesis supports the evolution of safe GNSS-based positioning systems from only snapshot based to filtered solutions. Ensuring integrity for Kalman filter in general and for GNSS/INS systems in particular is a game changer to achieve higher performance levels for future dualfrequency multi-constellation aviation services and is of vital importance for new ground and air applications like autonomous vehicles or urban air mobility.Note de contenu : Introduction

Composed by distinct phases (documentation, intervention, monitoring and use), MCH implies a great effort for the project manager to coordinate the interactions among very different professional figures. In recent years, the use of digital technologies has become an essential part of the MCH delicate process, from early documentation to late intervention phases. The most commonly used methodologies for digital data acquisition, such as terrestrial laser scanning and digital photogrammetry, have become common practice in a broad range of professional activities. On the contrary, the use of 3D models for MCH is still limited to few academic research to date, often lacking continuity and wide application after the end of specific projects. Furthermore, very few supra-national standard guidelines regulating their use are available to date. As a consequence, the operator who decides to use a 3D model as a basis for management is faced with the scarcity and fragmentation of standards and guidelines. Moreover, the lack of standard on quality of acquired data and digital products negatively influences the interaction between the academic research sector, the managers and the professional world. The focus is on the use of 3D models as a valid support tool in the MCH process, highlighting their advantages in all the distinct phases of the management. As an example, 3D data can constitute themselves the basis for the digital database, gathering all available information concerning a Cultural Heritage site, exploitable for restoration works or for scientific dissemination. In particular, the aim of this PhD research is to develop guidelines to produce 3D models for MCH, with the purpose to efficiently entry, store and manage digital data. The here provided guidelines investigate every aspect of the process leading from data acquisition to cataloguing and archiving, processing and creation of a simplified information system. Each recommendation guides the user through the management of digital data, by adapting to his/her level of knowledge with respect to digital technologies and methodologies. In this way, the manager can efficiently use 3D models in MCH projects. In order to elaborate guidelines that could be suitable for as many typologies of Cultural Heritage as possible an international approach was chosen, developing the thesis in joint supervision under the University of Bologna and the Universitat Politècnica de València. We decided to apply state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies to a variety of case studies. The main ones are the early Christian monuments of Ravenna (Italy) belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage List, and a small neogothic chapel located in Castellón de la Plana (Spain). The fruitful collaboration between two different countries allowed an invaluable exchange of MCH expertise and, more broadly, contributed to the elaboration of standardized and universally applicable MCH guidelines that will allow a better interaction between managers, the academic research world and the professional one. The investigation, by highlighting the problems inherent to the MCH, made it possible to identify the main open issues that need to be explored in future lines of research, such as the application of standards to a large number of cultural assets in an iterative, continuous and automatic way, in order to perfecting the standards; the search for automatic classification of raw data; the processing of collected data for the creation of relations, strategies and methods for the classification, integration and optimisation of heterogeneous data. [Termes IGN] temps instantanéRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a feature descriptor using Histogram of Oriented Mosaic Gradient (HOMG) that extracts spatial-spectral features directly from mosaic spectral images. Spectral imaging utilizes unique spectral signatures to distinguish objects of interest in the scene more discriminatively. Snapshot spectral cameras equipped with spectral filter arrays (SFAs) capture spectral videos in real time, making it possible to detect/track fast moving targets based on spectral imaging. How to effectively extract the spatial-spectral feature directly from the mosaic spectral images acquired by snapshot spectral cameras is a core issue for detection/tracking. So far, there is a lack of comprehensive and in-depth research on this issue. To this end, this paper proposed a new spatial-spectral feature extractor for mosaic spectral images. The proposed scheme finds two forms of SFA neighborhood (SFAN) to construct a feature extractor suitable for any SFA structure. Exploiting the spatial-spectral correlation in two SFANs, we design six mosaic spatial-spectral gradient operators to compute spatial-spectral gradient maps (SGMs). HOMG descriptors are constructed using the magnitude and orientation of SGMs. The effectiveness and generalizability of the proposed method have been verified with object tracking experiments. Compared to the state-of-the-art feature descriptors, HOMG ranked first on two datasets captured with snapshot spectral camera with different SFAs, achieving a gain of 3.9% and 5.9% in average success rate over the second-ranked feature.
