[Termes IGN] profil topographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Algorithms using contour-based DEMs to calculate slope gradient and aspect, and to classify and map slope profile and plan forms, were developed, which we call C-BATM (Contour-Based Automatic Terrain Mapping). These are important topographic attributes for various analyses and terrain-related hazard mapping. As a first step, a fall line, the line of the maximum gradients or a flow path, was generated from all data points of all contours. Then, using the fall line segment (between adjacent contours), slope gradient and aspect were calculated. The change in, slope gradients in three consecutives contours are the basis for classifying slope profile from into concave, planar and convex. Slope plan form was classified from the contour crenulation, using a point of inflection by examining the directional change of contour segments (line between two consecutive data points). In the process of classifying slope morphologies, the profile and plans curvatures were also calculated and recorded. Test results of these methods in mountainous areas indicate the advantage of using contour-based DEMs over the use of the grid-based DEM or TIN. These methods have a potential of much wider applications to terrain analyses and hydrological modeling. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne scanning laser altimetry (LiDAR) is an important new data source for environmental applications, being able to map topographic height, and the height of surface objects, to high vertical and horizontal accuracy over large areas. This paper describes a range image segmentation system for data from a LiDAR measuring either time of last significant return, or measuring time of both first and last returns. We focus on the application of the segmenter to improving the data required by 2D hydraulic flood models, i.e. maps of topographic height which provide model bathymetry, and vegetation height, which could be converted to distributed floodplain friction coefficients. In addition, the location of river channels and a suitable height contour are used to define the extent of the model domain. An advantage of segmentation is that it allows different topographic and vegetation height extraction algorithms to be used in regions of different cover type. LiDAR data for a reach of the River Severn, UK, is presented. Short vegetation heights (grass and cereal crops) are predicted with a rms error of 14 em. The topography underlying such cover differs from manually measured spot heights by 17 em (rms error). The topographic accuracy decreases in the presence of a densely wooded slope. Errors in the vegetation height map, apparent at the overlap regions of adjacent swaths, are reduced by the removal of heights measured at large scan angles. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The automation of feature extraction from digital imagery is the most challenging task facing those working today in photogrammetry research and development. Unsolved so far is the fully automatic and reliable detection and reconstruction of objects. There are solutions available for the automation of specific tasks under certain restrictions, but all methods show deficiencies when faced with poor image quality. Occlusions and shadows are factors which frequently prevent high success rates. One current practice involves a semiautomatic approach, a human operator being employed for the extremely difficult interpretation tasks. The authors present an overview of inJECT, a semiautomatic building extraction system. This system, developed by INPHO in cooperation with the Institute of Photogrammetry at the University of Bonn, offers a set of building primitives covering the most common basic house shapes. Automated modules assist the human operator in the measuring phase. The system does not require stereo viewing and operators need only a short course of training.
