[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In many applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) a common task is the conversion of addresses into grid coordinates. In many countries this is usually accomplished using address range TIGER-type files in conjunction with geocoding packages within a GIS. Improvements in GIS functionality and the storage capacity of large databases mean that the spatial investigation of data at the individual address level is now commonly performed. This process relies on the accuracy of the geocoding mechanism and this paper examines this accuracy in relation to cadastral records and census tracts. Results from a study of over 20000 addresses in Sydney, Australia, using a TIGER-type geocoding process suggest that 5-7.5% (depending on geocoding method) of addresses may be misallocated to census tracts, and more than 50% may be given coordinates within the land parcel of a different property. [Termes IGN] modélisation spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) A novel procedure to analyse the uncertainty associated to the output of GIS-based models is presented. The procedure can handle models of any degree of complexity that accept any kind of input data. Two important aspects of spatial modelling are addressed: the propagation of uncertainty from model inputs and model parameters up to the model output (uncertainty analysis) ; and the assessment of the relative importance of the sources of uncertainty in the output uncertainty (sensitivity analysis). Two main applications are proposed. The procedure allows implementation of a GIS-based model whose output can reliably support the decision process with an optimised allocation of resources for spatial data acquisition. This is possible in low cost strategy, based on numerical simulations on a small prototype of the GIS-based model. Furthermore, the procedure provides an effective model building tool to choose, from a group of alternative models, the best one in terms of cost-benefit analysis. A comprehensive case study is described. It concerns the implementation of a new GIS-based hydrologic model, whose goal is providing near real-time flood forecasting. [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Gazeteers and geographical thesauri can be regarded as parsimonious spatial models that associate geographical location with place names and encode some semantic relations between the names. They are of particular value in processing information retrieval requests in which the user employs place names to specify geographical context. Typically the geometric locational data in a gazetteer are confined to a simple footprint in the form of a centroid or a minimum bounding rectangle, both of which can be used to link to a map but are of limited value in determining spatial relationships. Here we describe a Voronoi diagram method for generating approximate regional extents from sets of centroids that are respectively inside and external to a region. The resulting approximations provide measures of areal extent and can be used to assist in answering geographical queries by evaluating spatial relationships such as distance, direction and common boundary length. Preliminary experimental evaluations of the method have been performed in the context of a semantic modelling system that combines the centroid data with hierarchical and adjacency relations between the associated place names.
