[Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) To support diversified uses of geographical information there is a need for enhanced spatial data infrastructures to create interoperability between users and producers of geographic data. One important interoperability problem is caused by differences in data semantics, for example heterogeneous land use/land cover classification systems. A critical review of an existing method for semantic interoperability between land cover classifications is used to motivate and introduce a modified framework based on conceptual spaces and rough fuzzy sets. Land cover categories are defined by a set of defining attributes formally represented as a collection of rough fuzzy membership functions and importance weights. This parameterized representation is used to translate between the US Natural Vegetation Classification Standard and the European CORINE Land Cover system based on evaluations of different aspects of semantic similarity between categories. The results demonstrate that the use of different similarity metrics in a conceptual space, together with the explicit rough fuzzy uncertainty representation, increases the semantic separation between land cover categories. Diagrams and maps illustrate the information that can be gained from the semantic similarity assessment. These developments open new possibilities to explore semantic relationships between concepts, both within a classification and between classifications used in different contexts. [Termes IGN] spatial metricsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses semantic accuracy in relation to images obtained with remote sensing. Semantic accuracy is defined in terms of map complexity. Complexity metrics are applied as a metric to measure complexity. The idea is that a homogeneous map of a low complexity is of a high semantic accuracy. In this study, complexity metrics like aggregation index, fragmentation index and patch size are applied on two images with different objectives, one from an agricultural area in the Netherlands, and one from a rural area in Kazakhstan. Images are segmented first using region merging segmentation. Effects on metrics and semantic accuracy are discussed. On the basis of well-defined subsets, we conclude that the complexity metrics are suitable to quantify the semantic accuracy of the map. Segmentation is the most useful for an agricultural area including various agricultural fields. Metrics are mutually comparable being highly correlated, but showing some different aspects in quantifying map homogeneity and identifying objects of a high semantic accuracy. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover mapping is perhaps the most important application of remote sensing data. The abundance of mixed pixels (representing uncertainties in class allocation), particularly in coarse spatial resolution images, has always been known to lead to difficulties in producing accurate land cover classifications. Soft classification methods may help in quantifying uncertainties in areas of transition between various types of land cover. This study aims to estimate and accommodate uncertainties in all stages of a supervised classification process (i.e. training, allocation and testing) so as to produce accurate and meaningful land cover classifications. Three soft classification methods have been used-a probabilistic maximum likelihood classifier and the two classifiers based on fuzzy set theory (fuzzy (c-means and possibilistic c-means). Uncertainty and accuracy measures based on a fuzzy error matrix have been adopted to evaluate each classifier. All of the classifiers show an increase in classification accuracy when uncertainty is appropriately accounted for in all stages of the supervised classification. In particular, the possibilistic c-means classifier produced the highest map and individual class accuracy and has been found to be more robust to the existence of uncertainties in the datasets. The approach suggested in this paper can be used to generate accurate land cover maps, even in the presence of uncertainties in the form of mixed pixels in remote sensing images. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a segmentation procedure is proposed, based on grey-level and multivariate texture to extract spatial objects from an image scene. Object uncertainty was quantified to identify transitions zones of objects with indeterminate boundaries. The Local Binary Pattern (LBP) operator, modelling texture, was integrated into a hierarchical splitting segmentation to identifiy homogeneous texture regions in an image. We proposed a multivariate extension of the standard univariate LBP operator to describe colour texture. The paper is illustrated with two case studies. The first considers an image with a composite of texture regions. The two LBP operators provided good segmentation results on both grey-scale and colour textures, depicted by accuracy values of 96% and 98% respectively. The second case study involved segmentation of coastal land cover objects from a multispectral Compact Airborne Spectral Imager (CASI) image, of a coastal area in the UK. Segmentation based on the univariate LBP measure provided unsatisfactory segmentation results from a single CASI band (70% accuracy). A multivariate LBP-based segmentation of three CASI bands improved segmentation results considerably (77% accuracy). Uncertainty values for object building blocks provided valuable information for identification of object transition zones. We conclude that the multivariate LBP texture model in combinaison with a hierarchical splitting segmentation framework is suitable for identifying objects and for quantifying their uncertainty.
