[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (auteur) The large number of commonly available geographical data sets means that users of this data face a difficult choice in selecting the set that best meets their requirements. In theory, metadata is helpful in this, but many studies suggest that the metadata created by data producers is incomprehensible to average users. The article aims to identify the essential information that users need to acquire the geographical data set that fits their needs. This information is then compared with the information that users can obtain from metadata, product data specifications, and the data itself. As a result of a survey the most important data quality elements were identified, as well as some information pertinent to users that is missing in metadata. The users stressed that a lack of value for optional attributes considerably decreases the informative value and fitness for use of existing data sets. This was also observed while analyzing the building thematic data layer, which is a part of The Polish National Topographic Database. The research shows that data quality is diversified within a database, and it may happen that for some subsets of data, quality criteria are not met. Finally, two data quality subelements – optional attribute and void value - were proposed, which will overcome some difficulties in assessing the fitness for use of data. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) One solution to the integration of additional characteristics, e.g. time and scale, into geographic information system (GIS) datasets is to model them as extra geometric dimensions perpendicular to the spatial ones, creating a higher-dimensional model. Previous work has been mostly limited to higher-dimensional rasters and hierarchies of trees, which grow exponentially with the dimension. As representations with limited topological relationships quickly become intractable in higher dimensions, a topological vector approach seems most suitable for this purpose, requiring the use of higher-dimensional topological data structures. We therefore present in this paper an evaluation and classification of the possible data structures for an nD GIS, including how they can be implemented to support real-world data aspects, such as holes, disconnected components and attributes, as well as practical issues that affect their feasibility, like the availability of algorithms, libraries and software. [Termes IGN] régression géographiquement pondéréeRésumé : (auteur) Land cover is of fundamental importance to many environmental applications and serves as critical baseline information for many large scale models e.g. in developing future scenarios of land use and climate change. Although there is an ongoing movement towards the development of higher resolution global land cover maps, medium resolution land cover products (e.g. GLC2000 and MODIS) are still very useful for modelling and assessment purposes. However, the current land cover products are not accurate enough for many applications so we need to develop approaches that can take existing land covers maps and produce a better overall product in a hybrid approach. This paper uses geographically weighted regression (GWR) and crowdsourced validation data from Geo-Wiki to create two hybrid global land cover maps that use medium resolution land cover products as an input. Two different methods were used: (a) the GWR was used to determine the best land cover product at each location; (b) the GWR was only used to determine the best land cover at those locations where all three land cover maps disagree, using the agreement of the land cover maps to determine land cover at the other cells. The results show that the hybrid land cover map developed using the first method resulted in a lower overall disagreement than the individual global land cover maps. The hybrid map produced by the second method was also better when compared to the GLC2000 and GlobCover but worse or similar in performance to the MODIS land cover product depending upon the metrics considered. The reason for this may be due to the use of the GLC2000 in the development of GlobCover, which may have resulted in areas where both maps agree with one another but not with MODIS, and where MODIS may in fact better represent land cover in those situations. These results serve to demonstrate that spatial analysis methods can be used to improve medium resolution global land cover information with existing products.
