We argue that this task requires developing ontologies revealing the point of view of each piece of information, and neglecting the technical choices behind the organization of information in data schemas. These ontologies need then to be aligned and globally compared. In this paper, we describe techniques allowing doing that in the fields of ontology alignment and natural language processing. We illustrate those points through results from experiments made on actual data with a semi-automated analysis of their specifications. [Termes IGN] web sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) [avant-propos] This book is the result of a collaborative initiative of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI), the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, the European umbrella organisation for geographic information (EUROGI), the Dutch innovation program Space for Geo-Information (RGI) and Geonovum, the Netherlands SDI executive committee. In addition to the traditional call for papers for the joint GSDI-11/ INSPIRE/ Geonovum RGI conference 'Spatial Data Infrastructure Convergence: Building SDI Bridges to Address Global Challenges' contributions of full articles were solicited for publication in this peer reviewed volume. In several instances, the articles submitted addressed the theme of the conference. In others they stuck to the more traditional fields of SDI. The reviewing process resulted in twenty articles that together can be summarised as Spatial Data Infrastructure Convergence: Research, Emerging Trends, and Critical Assessment. These topics are represented well in this volume. Note de contenu : - Peer Review Board for SDI Convergence: Research, Emerging Trends, and Critical Assessment

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Despite a long history of synergy, current techniques for integrating Geographic Information System (GIS) software with hydrologic simulation models do not fully utilize the potential of GIS for modeling hydrologic systems. Part of the reason for this is a lack of GIS data models appropriate for representing fluid flow in space and time. Here we address this challenge by proposing a spatiotemporal data model designed specifically for large-scale river basin systems. The data model builds from core concepts in geographic information science and extends these concepts to accommodate mathematical representations of fluid flow at a regional scale. Space-time is abstracted into three basic objects relevant to hydrologic systems: a control volume, a flux and a flux coupler. A control volume is capable of storing mass, energy or momentum through time, a flux represents the movement of these quantities within space-time and a flux coupler insures conservation of the quantities within an overall system. To demonstrate the data model, a simple case study is presented to show how the data model could be applied to digitally represent a river basin system. [Termes IGN] repère de référenceRésumé : (Auteur) All gravity field functionals obtained from an Earth gravitational model (EGM) depend on the underlying terrestrial reference frame (TRF), with respect to which the EGM’s spherical harmonic coefficients refer to. In order to maintain a coherent framework for the comparison of current and future EGMs, it is thus important to investigate the consistency of their inherent TRFs, especially when their use is intended for high precision studies. Following the methodology described in an earlier paper by Kleusberg (1980), the similarity transformation parameters between the associated reference frames for several EGMs (including the most recent CHAMP/GRACE models at the time of writing this paper) are estimated in the present study. Specifically, the differences between the spherical harmonic coefficients for various pairs of EGMs are parameterized through a 3D-similarity spatial transformation model that relates their underlying TRFs. From the least-squares adjustment of such a parametric model, the origin, orientation and scale stability between the EGMs’ reference frames can be identified by estimating their corresponding translation, rotation and scale factor parameters. Various aspects of the estimation procedure and its results are highlighted in the paper, including data weighting schemes, the sensitivity of the results with respect to the selected harmonic spectral band, the correlation structure and precision level of the estimated transformation parameters, the effect of the estimated differences of the EGMs’ reference frames on their height anomaly signal, and the overall feasibility of Kleusberg’s formulae for the assessment of TRF inconsistencies among global geopotential models.
