[Termes IGN] matrice de confusionRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents methods to test whether map error can explain the observed differences between two points in time among categories of land cover in maps. Such differences may be due to two reasons: error in the maps and change on the ground. Our methods use matrix algebra: (1) to determine whether error can explain specific types of observed categorical transitions between two maps, (2) to represent visually the differences between the maps that error cannot explain, and (3) to examine how the results are sensitive to possible variation in map error. The methods complement conventional accuracy assessment because they rely on standard confusion matrices that use either a random or a stratified sampling design. We illustrate the methods with maps from 1971 and 1999, which show seven land-cover categories for central Massachusetts. The methods detect four transitions from agriculture, range, forest, and barren in 1971 to built in 1999, which a 15 percent error cannot explain. Sensitivity analysis reveals that if the accuracy of the maps were less than 77 percent, then error could explain virtually all of the observed differences between the maps. The paper discusses the assumptions behind the methods and articulates priorities for future research. Copyright CaGISociety. [Termes IGN] serveur de métadonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Google Earth has been mentioned at least once at every meeting or conference of GIS-related professionals I've attended over the past year. It was even briefly referred to during defence of a PhD thesis on SDI clearinghouses. Google Earth is about business, technology, mapping, cartography, leveraging and integrating spatial data and internet. Reasons enough to take a closer look at the search engine from a personal geo-information perspective. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The preservation of spectral characteristics and the retention of high spatial resolution are two key issues in image fusion. Different applications may require different balances between the two. However, the limitation is that only one fused result is possible for most of the commonly used fusion methods; users have no control over how much spatial detail or spectral information should be retained. Both quantitative and qualitative criteria, including mean, standard deviation, entropy, average gradient, spectral distortion, correlation coefficient and visual assessment, were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed fuser. A SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) panchromatic image and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images were employed in the evaluation. The results show that the proposed method is slightly better than, or comparable to, commonly used image fusion methods, including Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS), principal component analysis (PCA), and two other wavelet-based fusion methods with replacement and with selection strategies, in terms of spectral characteristic preservation and high spatial resolution retention. Moreover, the proposed method can achieve a wide range of balances between spectral characteristic preservation and high spatial resolution retention, and thus is applicable in different applications. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Several different methods for the fusion of multispectral and panchromatic images based on the wavelet transform have been proposed. The majority provide satisfactory results, but there is one, the a trous algorithm, that presents several advantages over the other fusion methods. Its computation is very simple; it only involves elementary algebraic operations, such as products, differences and convolutions. It yields a better spatial and spectral quality than the other methods. Standard fusion methods do not allow control of the spatial and spectral quality of the fused image; high spectral quality implies low spatial quality and vice versa. This paper proposes a new version of a fusion method based on the wavelet transform, computed through the a trous algorithm, that permits customization of the trade-off between the spectral and spatial quality of the fused image through the evaluation of two quality indices: a spectral index (the ERGAS index) and a spatial one. For the latter, a new spatial index based on ERGAS concepts and translated to the spatial domain has been defined. In addition, several different schemes for the computation of the fusion method investigated have been evaluated to optimize the degradation level of the source image required to perform the fusion process. The performance of the proposed fusion method has been compared with the fusion methods based on wavelet Mallat and filtering in the Fourier domain.
