[Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Industrial forest plantation expansion is dramatically impacting the environment (biodiversity, soil, water, etc.) and social sphere. Since the enactment of Decree Law 701 (DL 701) in 1974 under the military government of Augusto Pinochet, forestry practices in Chile have become more intensive (genetic manipulation, high yield clearcutting and short rotation). The law (and its successive updates) covers up to 75% of plantation costs and is the keystone of pine and eucalyptus forest expansion. This paper presents a pluriannual detection model for monitoring and characterizing the high cutting frequency of these timber plantations. Thirteen Landsat and SPOT images taken between 1976 and 2008 are used and combined with ground data (oblique aerial photography, GPS field surveys and field sheets). A trichromatic composition is built from spectral information taken from a Red and Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelength along a temporal gradient of 32 years. This multi-temporal on-screen visual interpretation has led to a dynamic interpretation grid which reflects forest management stages in direct relation with pine and eucalyptus crop cycles. The method was tested on various time-steps covering the entire time period on two spatial scales — local and regional. All the spatio-temporal results are conclusive and the model established by remote sensing is of operational value. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) When individuals of a species utilize an environment, they generate movement patterns at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Field observations coupled with location technologies (e.g. GPS tags) enable the capture of detailed spatio-temporal data regarding these movement patterns. These patterns contain information about species-specific preferences regarding individual decision-making, locational choices and the characteristics of the habitat in which the animal resides. Spatial Data Mining approaches can be used to extract repeated spatio-temporal patterns and additional habitat preferences hidden within large spatially explicit movement datasets. We describe a method to determine the periodicity and directionality in movement exhibited by a migratory bird species. Results using a High Arctic-nesting Svalbard Barnacle Goose movement data yielded undetected patterns that were secondarily corroborated with expert field knowledge. Individual revisits by the geese to specific locations in the breeding and wintering grounds of Svalbard, Norway and Solway, Scotland, occurred with a periodicity of 334 days . Further, the orientation of this movement was detected to be mostly north-south. During long-range migration the geese use the north-south oriented Norwegian islands as “stepping stones”, Short-range movement between mudbank roosts to feeding fields in Solway also retained a north-south orientation. [Termes IGN] trottoirRésumé : (auteur) There are generally different and less wayfinding options for pedestrians than those for drivers. This makes developing models and tools that assist pedestrians in finding routes more challenging. The problem is even further exacerbated when specific routing requirements of people with disabilities are considered. While currently much research is focused on developing solutions for wayfinding of pedestrians, very few address the specific requirements of individuals with disabilities and none is focused on evaluation of the accessibility of built environments. In this paper, we propose a new approach in evaluating the accessibility of built environments for wayfinding of individuals with disabilities. The proposed approach involves simulation and visualization of the accessibility of sidewalk segments allowing urban planners, and other designers and engineers, to gain an understanding of how accessible built environments are and allowing individuals with disabilities to assess the accessibility of built environments with respect to their mobility needs. Simulations were conducted using a sidewalk network database which contains accessibility attributes based on the standards recommended by the Americans with Disabilities Act. To demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach, a representative model was used to simulate scenarios for the wayfinding requirements at both community and individual levels. The results of the simulations are visualized in heat-maps.
