Error models are developed and evaluated by examining the correlation between various DEM parameters and the magnitude of the observed DEM vertical error. DEM vertical errors were estimated using a dataset of more than 51000 points of known elevation obtained from a kinematic global positioning satellite (GPS) ground survey. Elevation variability and the quality of the stereo-correlation match over small spatial scales were the dominant factors that determined the magnitude of the DEM error at any given location. The error models are strongly correlated with the magnitude of the DEM vertical error and are shown to adequately represent the full range of the observed error. The error models are used to estimate the magnitude of the vertical error for every point in the DEMs. The models are then used to predict the overall error in the DEMs. The results demonstrate that the error models can accurately quantify and predict the spatial variability of the DEM error. The Institute for Commercialization of Remote Sensing Technologies (ICREST) at the University of Missouri-Columbia evaluated some potential applications of the new datasets using simulated and actual Ikonos satellite data in the highly urbanized Jordan Creek watershed in Missouri. This paper describes the characteristics and applications of high spatial resolution land use/land cover information, DEMs and merged products used for watershed analysis. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-criteria évaluation (MCE) is perhaps the most fondamental of decision support opérations in geographical information systems (GIS). This paper reviews two main MCE approaches employed in GIS, namely Boolean and Weighted Linear Combination (WLC), and discusses issues and problems associated with both. To resolve the conceptuel differences between the two approaches, this paper proposes the application of fuzzy measures, a concept that is broader but that includes fuzzy set membership, and argues that the standardized factors of MCE belong to a general class of fuzzy measures and the more specific instance of fuzzy set membership. This perspective provides a strong theoretical basis for the standardisation of factors and their subsequent aggregation. In this contexte, a new aggregation operator that accommodates and extends the Boolean and WLC approaches is discussed : the Ordered Weighted Average. A case study of industriel allocation in Nakuru, Kenya is employed to illustrate the different approaches.
