[Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Searching for relevant knowledge across heterogeneous geospatial databases requires an extensive knowledge of the semantic meaning of images, a keen eye for visual patterns, and efficient strategies for collecting and analyzing data with minimal human intervention. In this paper, we present our recently developed content-based multimodal Geospatial Information Retrieval and Indexing System (GeoIRIS) which includes automatic feature extraction, visual content mining from large-scale image databases, and high-dimensional database indexing for fast retrieval. Using these underpinnings, we have developed techniques for complex queries that merge information from heterogeneous geospatial databases, retrievals of objects based on shape and visual characteristics, analysis of multiobject relationships for the retrieval of objects in specific spatial configurations, and semantic models to link low-level image features with high-level visual descriptors. GeoIRIS brings this diverse set of technologies together into a coherent system with an aim of allowing image analysts to more rapidly identify relevant imagery. GeoIRIS is able to answer analysts' questions in seconds, such as "given a query image, show me database satellite images that have similar objects and spatial relationship that are within a certain radius of a landmark." [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) This paper discusses the importance of determining an accurate depiction of total population and specific sub-population distribution for urban areas in order to develop an improved “denominator,” which would enable the calculation of more correct rates in GIS analyses involving public health, crime, and urban environmental planning. Rather than using data aggregated by arbitrary administrative boundaries such as census tracts, we use dasymetric mapping, an areal interpolation method using ancillary information to delineate areas of homogeneous values. We review previous dasymetric mapping techniques (which often use remotely sensed land-cover data) and contrast them with our technique, Cadastral-based Expert Dasymetric System (CEDS), which is particularly suitable for urban areas. The CEDS method uses specific cadastral data, land-use filters, modeling by expert system routines, and validation against various census enumeration units and other data. The CEDS dasymetric mapping technique is presented through a case study of asthma hospitalizations in the Bronx, New York City, in relation to proximity buffers constructed around major sources of air pollution. The case study shows the impact that a more accurate estimation of population distribution has on a current environmental justice and health disparities research project, and the potential of CEDS for other GIS applications. [Termes IGN] réseau bayesienRésumé : (Auteur) Content-based image-retrieval techniques based on query scenes are a powerful means for exploration and mining of large remote sensing image databases. However, the gap between low-level unsupervised extracted features in content-based retrieval and the high-level semantic concepts of user queries limits the performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a specialized approach using a context-sensitive Bayesian network for semantic inference of segmented scenes. The regions' remote sensing related semantic concepts are inferred in a multistage process based on their spectral and textural characteristics as well as the semantics of adjacent regions. During the actual retrieval, the semantics are employed for the extraction of candidate scenes which are evaluated and ranked in a consecutive step. The approach was implemented and compared with a different strategy that utilizes the extracted features from the imagery directly to infer the semantics. In summary, the developed system achieved higher precision and recall rates using the same training data Copyright IEEE Numéro de notice : A2007-219 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : GEOMATIQUE/INFORMATIQUE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1109/TGRS.2007.892008 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2007.892008 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=28582

[Termes IGN] image Terra-MISRRésumé : (Auteur) The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) data products now include a scene classification for each 1.1-km pixel that was developed using Support Vector Machines (SVMs), a cutting-edge machine learning technique for supervised classification. Using a combination of spectral, angular, and texture features, each pixel is classified as land, water, cloud, aerosol, or snow/ice, with the aerosol class further divided into smoke, dust, and other aerosols. The classifier was trained by MISR scientists who labeled hundreds of scenes using a custom interactive tool that showed them the results of the training in real time, making the process significantly faster. Preliminary validation shows that the accuracy of the classifier is approximately 81% globally at the 1.1-km pixel level. Applications of this classifier include global studies of cloud and aerosol distribution, as well as data mining applications such as searching for smoke plumes. This is one of the largest and most ambitious operational uses of machine learning techniques for a remote-sensing instrument, and the success of this system will hopefully lead to further use of this approach.
