[Termes IGN] traitement de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Nous considérons que la carte joue un rôle clef dans la construction du savoir en sciences sociales et n'est en aucun cas une simple image artistique d'un espace, puisque la finalité d'une carte est avant tout la transmission d'une information. Elle peut être également, notamment en recherche, le point de départ d'une réflexion. La carte doit être considérée comme un message spécial employant un langage capable d'opérer une transposition de sens. La carte thématique, modèle plus abstrait qu'une carte topographique, met en scène des structures qui ne sont pas directement perceptibles dans le paysage, mais uniquement visualisables. Pour une recherche doctorale portant sur "les analogies et les disparités du fait urbain au Maghreb", nous avons été amenés à réaliser un nombre conséquent de cartes. Par le biais de la cartographie assistée par ordinateur, nouvelle technologie, nous avons démontré qu'elle s'avère être un instrument de synthèse pertinent et efficace et qu'elle ne sert pas uniquement à repérer des lieux, à localiser des noms ou des nombres sur un fond. L'explication géographique, à partir d'un système documentaire servi par une spatialisation de l'information, est judicieuse car l'utilisation de la C.A.O. permet de transformer la carte en un instrument médité et fructueux pour expliquer et comprendre certains faits urbains au Maghreb. Ce résultat est optimisé si une démarche pédagogique est adoptée (page de commentaire placée systématiquement en regard de l'iconographie) car elle permet de mettre davantage en valeur cet outil en expliquant sa construction et en synthétisant les informations essentielles. The city is one of the municipalities of the country with its own administrative autonomy, with limited financial resources. One of the objectives is a systematic survey of informal settlements surrounding the centre of the city. The examples of GIS people and problems that are scattered through this book have been chosen deliberately to illuminate this commonality, as well as the interplay between organizations and people from different sectors. To differing extents, the five sections of the book develop common concerns with effectiveness and efficiency, by bringing together information from disparate sources, acting within regulatory and ethical frameworks, adhering to scientific principles, and preserving good reputations. This, then, is a book that combines the basics of GIS with the solving of problems which often have no single, ideal solution - the world of business, government, and interdisciplinary, mission-orientated holistic science.
In short, we have tried to create a book that remains attuned to the way the world works now, that understands the ways in which most of us increasingly operate as knowledge workers, and that grasps the need to face complicated issues that do not have ideal solutions. As with the first edition of the book, this is an unusual enterprise and product. It has been written by a multinational partnership, drawing upon material from around the world. One of the authors is an employee of a leading software vendor and two of the other three have had business dealings with ESRI over many years. Moreover, some of the illustrations and examples come from the customers of that vendor. We wish to point out, however, that neither ESRI (nor Wiley) has ever sought to influence our content or the way in which we made our judgments, and we have included references to other software and vendors throughout the book.
