[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This book is divided into eight sections. Each section begins with a brief overview and a few suggestions for additional reading. The articles in the first section deal with the definition of GIS, the history of the technology, and requirements and principles for GIS implementation. The second section focuses on entry of spatial digital data into a GIS. Section three includes articles on the principles of logic as they apply to geographic data analysis, fundamental GIS operations, and digital terrain models. The fourth part of the book deals with GIS data quality issues and error assessment. Section five includes articles on the most recent developments and future trends in GIS including expert systems. Recent examples of GIS applications can be found in section six and information on how to select and evaluate a GIS is found in section seven. The final section provides a guide to information sources on GIS literature including books, journals, symposia proceedings, and an extensive selection of newsletters. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The geographic information system (GISI has dramatically changed the rale at which georeferenced data can be produced, updated, and disseminated It has made the production and analysis of geographic information more efficient, and has changed the way this information is perceived and used GISes now play an essential role in the management of land resources from the local to the global scale from municipal planning to natural resource assessment This book provides a concise and practical introduction to the use of GIS technology General con--cepts are introduced with examples that show a wide range of applications including agriculture land use planning, mineral exploration, and municipal information management. Then the components of a GIS arc described in the context of practical information requirements A chapter is devoted to the fundamentals of remote sensing, which has become a major GIS data source The procedures and equipment used for data input and output are reviewed, highlighting tradeoffs in the use of competing technologies like scanning and manual digitizing Data quality data manage--ment, and GIS analysis functions are then presented from the perspective of practical methods that are used to generate information products Hinally. the process of GIS implementation is examined addressing such organizational issues as needs analysis, system evaluations, the justification for acquir-ing a GIS. cost-benefit analysis, and the integration ot a GIS into an organization s existing information environment. Political and legal issues in the control of information and the liability for its dissemination often arise in the operation of a GIS. These concerns are clearly addressed with strategies for minimizing the risks to both the producer and user of GIS products The author s practical approach provides comprehensive coverage of the diverse procedures and technologies used in a GIS. The book should appeal to professionals and discipline specialists new to GIS as well as experienced users involved in the management of GIS facilities. Note de contenu : PREFACE
