However, as a secondary source, it has a different methodological origin than travel survey data, usually relying on unsupervised algorithms, and so it requires to be assessed as a dataset. This assessment is challenging, because, in general, there is not a benchmark dataset or a ground truth scenario available, as travel surveys only represent a partial view of the phenomenon and suffer from their own biases. For this critical task, which involves urban planners and data scientists, we study the design space of the visualization of cross-origin, multivariate flow datasets. For this purpose, we introduce the Modalflow system, which incorporates and adapts different visualization techniques in a notebook-like setting, presenting novel visual encodings and interactions for flows with modal partition into scatterplots, flow maps, origin-destination matrices, and ternary plots. Using this system, we extract general insights on visual analysis of pervasive and survey data for urban mobility and assess a mobile phone network dataset for one metropolitan area. A polyline is first transformed into a corresponding Fourier descriptor consisting of normalized Fourier-series-expansion coefficients. Then, the most significant finite components of the Fourier descriptor are selected and ranked to constitute the polyline constrained Fourier descriptor. Using Shannon’s information theory, information content of the constrained Fourier-descriptor components is defined. Next, head/tail breaks are introduced to iteratively divide the constrained Fourier descriptor into head and tail components according to the heavy-tailed distribution of information contents. Thus, simplified polylines are reconstructed using ordered heads generated from head/tail breaks. Finally, the radical law is introduced and applied to model multiscale polyline representation by quantifying the scale of each simplified polyline. Three experiments are designed and conducted to evaluate the proposed model. The results demonstrate that the proposed model is valid and efficient for quantifying multiscale polyline representation. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The objective of the current study is to estimate the annual average soil loss through RUSLE model and furthermore assess the soil erosion risk and its distribution using frequency ratio (FR) probability algorithm. At first, soil erosion risk zones were identified using FR model by the consideration 14 soil erosion conditioning factors such as land use (LU/LC), slope, slope aspect, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), altitude, plan curvature, stream power index, distance from river, road, and lineament, soil types, rainfall erosivity, slope length and lineament density. Secondly, the spatial pattern of annual average soil loss rates was estimated using RUSLE model with consideration of five factors such as, rainfall erosivity (R), cover management (C), slope length (LS), soil erodability (K), and conservation practice factors (P). In order to map soil erosion susceptibility by the FR model, dataset divided randomly into parts 70/30 percent for training and validation purposes, respectively. Based on the FR value, the susceptibility map was reclassified into five different critical erosion probability zones. Among this, the severe and high erosion zones occupy 13.69% and 16.26%, respectively, of the total area, where as low and very low susceptibility zones together constitute 32.98% of the River Basin. The assessed high amount of average annual soil erosion (more than 100 t/ha/year) is occupied 9.55% of the total study area. It is conclude that high soil erosion susceptibility and yearly average soil loss were performed in this study area. Therefore, the produced soil erosion susceptibility maps and annual average soil erosion map can be very useful for primary land use planning and soil erosion hazard mitigation purpose for prioritizing areas. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) By nature, slopes are conformed by forces that are in constant balance. Altering this natural balance causes the sliding of soil towards lower zones. Landslides are a constant danger that compromises the general welfare of society. Landslides mapping is especially important for urban areas or development plans. The innovative aspect of this study is the creation of the Topographic Connection Method (TPCM) to automatically map landslides using two types of landslides 1) falls and 2) flows. TPCM cartography results were compared to a previously proven method (Contour Connection Method), as well as to the manual inventory method. Each method was run four times to locate changes through time by using satellite imagery, digital elevations models and 3D relief visualizations with data covering a period from 2012 to 2017. Results showed both falls and flows with all three methods and demonstrated that TPCM can improve mapping accuracy by up to 14%. [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) Recently, the severe intensification of atmospheric carbon has highlighted the importance of urban tree contributions in atmospheric carbon mitigations in city areas considering sustainable urban green planning and management systems. Explicit and timely information on urban trees and their roles in the atmospheric Carbon Stock (CS) are essential for policymakers to take immediate actions to ameliorate the effects of deforestation and their worsening outcomes. In this study, a detailed methodology for urban tree CS calibration and mapping was developed for the small urban area of Sassuolo in Italy. For dominant tree species classification, a remote sensing approach was applied, utilizing a high-resolution WV3 image. Five dominant species were identified and classified by applying the Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach with an overall accuracy of 78%. The CS calibration was done by utilizing an allometric model based on the field data of tree dendrometry—i.e., Height (H) and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH). For geometric measurements, a terrestrial photogrammetric approach known as Structure-from-Motion (SfM) was utilized. Out of 22 randomly selected sample plots of 100 square meters (10 m × 10 m) each, seven plots were utilized to validate the results of the CS calibration and mapping. In this study, CS mapping was done in an efficient and convenient way, highlighting higher CS and lower CS zones while recognizing the dominant tree species contributions. This study will help city planners initiate CS mapping and predict the possible CS for larger urban regions to ensure a sustainable urban green management system.
