The models were constructed by exploring relationships between ignition location/cause and values of geographical and environmental variables using logistic regression and neural networks. The conclusions are that the spatial patterns of fire ignition identified can be used for prediction, the spatial patterns are different for the different causes, the logistic models and the neural networks both reveal acceptable levels of predictive ability but the neural networks present better accuracy and robustness, the maps produced by the two methods are similar, and the information contained in the spatial position of ignition events can be used to gain predictive capability over an important phenomenon that is difficult to characterize and, for that reason, has not been included in most of the currently used fire danger estimation systems. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) A crucial requirement for the effective exploitation of geographic information is users' access to the knowledge held in corresponding stored resources, i.e. their understanding of what can be derived from available geographic databases and software. At the core of it is the problem of how to share and reuse knowledge, a major current challenge of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The work presented here extends upon lessons learnt in AI. The proposed solution to the users access issue is an expert system that stores geographical knowledge derivation recipes, and that allows users to browse and customise these recipes. Specifically, we build a model representing the recipes components,i.e. geographic application patterns. This model structures metadata about geographic data and metadata about stored processes, and it describes the usage of these data and processes. A prototype of this system, coded in java, is presented in this paper.
[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper details the research agenda of the International Cartographic Association Commission on Visualization / Working group on Database-Visualization Links. The paper stressed the need for the closer integration of the three largely disparate technologies : geographic visualization, knowledge discovery in databases, and geocomputation. The introduction explains the meaning behind these terms, the ethos behind their practice, and their connections within the broad realm of knowledge construction activities. The state of the art is then described for different approaches to knowledge construction, concentrating where possible on visual and geographically oriented methods. From these sections, a research agenda is synthetized in the form of three sets of research questions adressing : (1) Visual approches to data mining ; (2) visual support for knowledge construction and geocomputation ; and (3) database and data models that must be satisfied to make visually-led knowledge construction a reality in the geographic realm. Conclusions relate this agenda to issues of (1) data, (2) geographic knowledge, and (3) the visualization environment and pose significant challenges to the way currently represent geographic information and knowledge within computational systems. With this revised edition, Wilford brings the story up to the present day, as he shows the impact of new technologies that make it possible for cartographers to go where no one has been before, from the deepest reaches of the universe (where astronomers are mapping time as well as space) to the inside of the human brain. These modern-day mapmakers join the many earlier adventurers-including ancient Greek stargazers, Renaissance seafarers, and the explorers who mapped the American West-whose exploits shape this dramatic story of human inventiveness and limitless curiosity.
