[Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) Natural hazards demand a rapid assessment of the crisis situation and the use of Geomatics platforms, sensors and techniques can efficiently answer this need. Remotely sensed data can, in fact, provide a valuable source of broad scale information at each stage of the disaster management cycle, supporting scientists and authorities in the decision-making process. Geomatics-based procedures and techniques can be especially exploited in the emergency mapping domain for the extraction of reference (pre-event) and crisis (post-event) geographic data. The major challenges today concern the efficient selection (and integration) of the most fit-for-purpose mapping solution(s) and the development of automatic procedures to increase efficiency in data processing. This survey article provides a review of the current optical remote sensing sensors (both satellite and airborne) for rapid mapping applications. Advantages and disadvantages are evaluated in order to support the selection process of the most appropriate means to gather the required information (i. e., significant and value-added data). Since valuable information should be delivered in a very short time, the management of time is defined as a priority and several solutions are discussed to pursue efficiency in both data acquisition and processing. With this in mind, the most significant issues affecting time in each step of the work-flow and overall accuracy are analyzed and reported. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Among the systems that aim to help users to perform map reading tasks, augmented reality (AR) is one of the most promising. However, the impact of this new technology in terms of acceptance, motivation and improvement of the learning process has still not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to assess the contribution of an AR system for map reading and for improving users’ understanding of geographic data. Landscape and census data from New Zealand were used to evaluate the performance of an AR system in an experiment involving 60 participants. Differences in the participants’ backgrounds were reflected in the way they completed the task for both printed maps and the AR system and 90% of the participants preferred to work with the AR system rather than with traditional printed maps. Users that had previous experience of the geographical dataset provided performed the task better using only the printed maps, while those without that experience performed better with the AR system. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) A design pattern approach for conceptualizing the cartographic design process is presented. A design pattern presents a solution to a problem by describing solutions for the commonalities in problems to be solved. The commonalities of the cartographic design process are identified and MapDesign is described, a design pattern for generating a set of maps from big geospatial data. The MapDesign pattern allows increased map throughput through automation and distributed processing, which frees up time for cartographers and geographic information scientists to make sense of big geospatial data and to select and refine map designs. The description of the MapDesign pattern can aid software developers in understanding how to build tools that allow automation and distributed processing in parts of the map design process for visualizing big geospatial data. Conversely, the visual nature of design patterns can assist cartographers with understanding how software components interact to produce maps. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Avalanches are behind the majority of fatalities and heavy damage to property in snow-covered mountainous terrain like Himalaya. Recognizing avalanche susceptible areas and publication of avalanche susceptibility maps assist decision-makers and planners to execute suitable measures to reduce the avalanche risk. The present study is an attempt to prepare an avalanche susceptibility map of the Nubra valley region using multi-criteria decision analysis–analytical hierarchy process model in GIS environment. The most prominent avalanche occurrence factors used in this model are slope, aspect, curvature, elevation, terrain roughness and ground cover. ASTER GDEM V2 and Landsat 8 satellite imagery were used to generate considered factors. For validation of the results, prediction rate/accuracy is calculated using the avalanche inventory map of documented avalanche locations. To calculate the prediction accuracy, area under the ROC curve (ROC-AUC) method has been used. The prediction accuracy of the validation results using ROC-AUC shows 91%.
