[Termes IGN] recensement démographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The US Census provides the primary source of spatially explicit social data, but changing block boundaries complicate analyses of housing growth over time. We compared procedures for reconciling housing density data between 1990 and 2000 census block boundaries in order to assess the sensitivity of analytical methods to estimates of housing growth in Oregon. Estimates of housing growth varied substantially and were sensitive to the method of interpolation. With no processing and areal-weighted interpolation, more than 35% of the landscape changed; 75-80% of this change was due to decline in housing density. This decline was implausible, however, because housing structures generally persist over time. Based on aggregated boundaries, 11% of the landscape changed, but only 4% experienced a decline in housing density. Nevertheless, the housing density change map was almost twice as coarse spatially as the 2000 housing density data. We also applied a dasymetric approach to redistribute 1990 housing data into 2000 census boundaries under the assumption that the distribution of housing in 2000 reflected the same distribution as in 1990. The dasymetric approach resulted in conservative change estimates at a fine resolution. All methods involved some type of trade-off (e.g. analytical difficulty, data resolution, magnitude or bias in direction of change). However, our dasymetric procedure is a novel approach for assessing housing growth over changing census boundaries that may be particularly useful because it accounts for the uniquely persistent nature of housing over time. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Visualizing large geo-demographical datasets using pixel-based techniques involves mapping the geospatial dimensions of a data point to screen coordinates and appropriately encoding its statistical value by color. The analysis of such data presents a great challenge. General tasks involve clustering, categorization, and searching for patterns of interest for sociological or economic research. Available visual encodings and screen space limitations lead to over-plotting and hiding of patterns and clusters in densely populated areas, while sparsely populated areas waste space and draw the attention away from the areas of interest. In this paper, two new approaches (RadialScale and AngularScale) are introduced to create density-equalized maps, while preserving recognizable features and neighborhoods in the visualization. These approaches build the core of a multi-scaling technique based on local features of the data described as local minima and maxima of point density. Scaling is conducted several times around these features, which leads to more homogeneous distortions. Results are illustrated using several real-world datasets. Our evaluation shows that the proposed techniques outperform traditional techniques as regard the homogeneity of the resulting data distributions and therefore build a more appropriate basis for analytic purposes. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) There has been increase in the incidence of major disasters and the damage caused, in terms both of human suffering and economic cost. To mitigate the consequences, better post-disaster management tools are needed and GIS plays a major role here. Current technological developments in GIS and collaborative web-based mapping using interoperable geo-webservices and user-generated content could take disaster mapping an important step forward. [Termes IGN] observation de la TerreRésumé : (Auteur) The conflicts in Darfur and Chad have led to excessive human-rights violations, including murder, rap and enforced displacement. Millions of civilians have had to leave their homes and hundreds of thousands have died as a result to attacks. The worst years of fighting were 2003 and 2004, but violence is on the increase again. International peacekeeping has not proved effective and access to humanitarian agencies is limited. A powerful tool in support of planning process for international missions is earth observation (EO) via up-to-date satellite imagery.
