[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Spatially coincident land-cover information frequently varies due to technological and political variations. This is especially problematic for timeseries analyses. We present an approach using expert expressions of how the semantics of different datasets relate to integrating temporal time series landcover information where the classification classes have fundamentally changed. We use land-cover mapping in the UK (LCMGB and LCM2000) as example data sets because of the extensive object-based meta-data in the LCM2000. Inconsistencies between the two datasets can arise from random, gross and systematic error and from an actual change in land cover. Locales of possible land-cover change are inferred by comparing characterizations derived from the semantic relations and meta-data. Field visits showed errors of omission to be 21% and errors of commission to be 28%, despite the accuracy limitations of the land-cover information when compared with the field survey component of the Countryside Survey 2000. [Termes IGN] raisonnement spatialRésumé : (Auteur) Mangroves are difficult to map accurately from satellite data by means of parametric classification because of their spectral similarity to other coastal vegetation despite their habitat being inside coastal waters. This study aims to improve the mapping accuracy through incorporation of such spatial knowledge about mangroves in the Waitemata Harbor of Auckland, New Zealand, from SPOT data. The spatial knowledge was combined with spectral knowledge in the mapping. Supervised classification was found to map stunted and lush mangroves at an accuracy of, respectively, 46.7 percent and 68.3 percent. These accuracy levels rose, respectively, to 83.3 percent and 96.7 percent after the spatial knowledge was sequentially incorporated into the mapping. A similar accuracy level was achieved from knowledge-based spatial reasoning. If integrated simultaneously with spectral knowledge, spatial knowledge did not improve the accuracy noticeably because of difficulty in gaining quality spectral knowledge. It is concluded that knowledge-based, post-classification processing considerably improves the accuracy of mapping mangroves over parametric classification. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser altimetry has the potential to make frequent detailed observations that are important for many aspects of studying land surface processes. However, the uncertainties inherent in airborne laser altimetry data have rarely been well measured. Uncertainty is often specified as generally as 20 cm in elevation and 40 cm planimetric. To better constrain these uncertainties, we present an analysis of several datasets acquired specifically to study the temporal consistency of laser altimetry data and, thus, assess its operational value. The error budget has three main components, each with a time regime. For measurements acquired less than 50 ms apart, elevations have a local standard deviation in height of 3.5 cm, enabling the local measurement of surface roughness of the order of 5 cm. Points acquired seconds apart acquire an additional random error due to differential geographic positioning system fluctuation. Measurements made up to an hour apart show an elevation drift of 7 cm over a half hour. Over months, this drift gives rise to a random elevation offset between swathes, with an average of 6.4 cm. The root mean square planimetric error in point location was derived as 37.4 cm. We conclude by considering the consequences of these uncertainties on the principle application of laser altimetry in the U.K. intertidal zone monitoring.
