Hyperspectral imagery provides the necessary spectral diversity to recover the composition of materials on site for applications such as the detection of fires, anomalies, chemical agents, targets and changes in the scene. The requirement for cheaper and more compact devices (e.g. to be embarked on low cost satellites and airborne platform) which are capable of capturing this information has led to the development of nonconventional innovative design concepts to overcome the technological limitations of traditional cameras. Data acquired by such novel imaging devices following the computational imaging paradigm are typically not readily exploitable for the final application. A computational phase is hence needed for extracting useful information from the raw acquisitions. This thesis addresses this issue by setting up an inversion problem. The general approach is to characterize the data fidelity term with a physical model, describing the underlying optical transformations performed by the device. The challenge is then shifted on the regularization step to properly characterizes the features of the quantities of interest and improve the accuracy of the estimation, which can be tackled with variational techniques. The analysis is applied to two novel concepts for nonconventional optical devices. The first one is a novel compressed acquisition imaging system based on color filter arrays, which embeds information from sensors with different spatial and spectral characteristics into a single mosaiced product. As opposed to existing compressed sensing based devices, the goal is not to recover the original uncompressed multiresolution sources, but instead to directly recover a synthetic fused image with both high spatial and spectral resolution. The proposed solution relies on the total variation regularization and is the subject of a detailed analysis, comparing its compressive power with straightforward software alternatives, evaluating its performances as the amount of channels changes, and validating its efficiency in comparison to state of the art methods when applied to classical fusion or mosaicing algorithms separately. The second class of devices is based on the ImSPOC patent, a design concept for a low finesse snapshot imaging spectrometer based on the interferometry of Fabry-Pérot. Its ideal behaviour follows the principle of the Fourier Transform Spectroscopy, as its acquisition can be interpreted as a sampled version of an interferogram, arranged across different sub-images distributed on the same focal plane. After defining a physical model based on optical geometry, its validity is evaluated over real acquisitions by setting up a Bayesian inference problem to determine its parameters, with approaches based on maximum likelihood estimators, regular-grid searches and nonlinear regression.A variety of preliminary tests are then carried out on the inversion method, with approaches based on singular value decomposition and sparse-inducing regularizers, accompanied by a analysis of their robustness to model mismatches. [Termes IGN] tenseurRésumé : (auteur) In this article, we propose a novel tensorial approach, namely, generalized tensor regression, for hyperspectral image classification. First, a simple and effective classifier, i.e., the ridge regression for multivariate labels, is extended to its tensorial version by taking advantages of tensorial representation. Then, the discrimination information of different modes is exploited to further strengthen the capacity of the model. Moreover, the model can be simplified and solved easily. Different from traditional tensorial methods, the proposed model can be utilized to capture not only the intrinsic structure of data in a physical sense but also the generalized relationship of data in a logical sense. Our proposed approach is shown to be effective for different classification purposes on a series of instantiations. Specifically, our experiment results with hyperspectral images collected by the airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer, the reflective optics spectrographic imaging system and the ITRES CASI-1500 demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach as compared to other tensor-based classifiers and multiple kernel learning methods. Over a 3-year period, we analyzed different wheat cultivars grown under different experimental conditions in China and Canada and studied the effects of viewing angle on the relationships between various vegetation indices (VIs) and leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC) using hyperspectral data from 11 field experiments. The objective was to improve the prediction accuracy by minimizing the effects of viewing angle on LNC estimation to construct a novel vegetation index (VI) for use under different experimental conditions. We examined the stability of previously reported optimum VIs obtained from 13 traditional indices for estimating LNC at 13 viewing zenith angles (VZAs) in the solar principal plane (SPP). Backscattering direction showed better index performance than forward scattering direction. Red-edge VIs including modified normalized difference vegetation index (mND705), ratio index within the red edge region (RI-1dB) and normalized difference red edge index (NDRE) were highly correlated with LNC, as confirmed by high R2 determination coefficients. However, these common VIs tended to saturation, as the relationships strongly depended on experimental conditions. To overcome the influence of VZA on VIs, the chlorophyll- and LNC-sensitive NDRE index was divided by the floating-position water band index (FWBI) to generate the integrated narrow-band vegetation index. The highest correlation between the novel NDRE/FWBI parameter and LNC (R2 = 0.852) occurred at −10°, while the lowest correlation (R2 = 0.745) occurred at 60°. NDRE/FWBI was more highly correlated with LNC than existing commonly used VIs at an identical viewing zenith angle. Upon further analysis of angle combinations, our novel VI exhibited the best performance, with the best prediction accuracy at 0° to −20° (R2 = 0.838, RMSE = 0.360) and relatively good accuracy at 0° to −30° (R2 = 0.835, RMSE = 0.366). As it is possible to monitor plant N status over a wide range of angles using portable spectrometers, viewing angles of as much as 0° to −30° are common. Consequently, we developed a united model across angles of 0° to −30° to reduce the effects of viewing angle on LNC prediction in wheat. The proposed combined NDRE/FWBI parameter, designated the wide-angle-adaptability nitrogen index (WANI), is superior for estimating LNC in wheat on a regional scale in China and Canada. [Termes IGN] spectromètre imageurRésumé : (auteur) We describe an approach to improve Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) results for applications involving discrimination among spectrally-similar species, and commonly occur in multispectral and hyperspectral vegetation remote sensing studies. Such applications are inherently difficult, due to the high degree of similarity between distinct species, coupled with potentially high intra-species variability caused by factors such as growing conditions, canopy structure, ambient illumination, or substrate characteristics. We describe a method to map spectra to a feature space where distinctions between plant species are emphasized using a transformation based on Multiclass Discriminant Analysis. We compute this transformation using groups of pixels that represent individual plant canopies similar to the endmembers in MESMA’s spectral library, and describe a technique to automatically select such spectra from a given image. Compared to conventional MESMA, and also to several alternative MESMA formulations, we observe up to twofold increases in accuracy, along with a factor of ten reduction in computation time using our MESMA approach in several species discrimination applications. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for agricultural species discrimination applications using spectra captured by two different imaging spectrometers. [Termes IGN] spectromètre imageurRésumé : (Auteur) A new airborne facility instrument for Earth science applications is introduced. The Mineral and Gas Identifier (MAGI) is a wide-swath (programmable up to ±42° off nadir) moderate spectral resolution thermal-infrared (TIR) imaging spectrometer that spans the 7.1- to 12.7-μm spectral window in 32 uniform and contiguous channels. Its spectral resolution enables improved discrimination of rock and mineral types, greatly expanded gas-detection capability, and generally more accurate land-surface temperature retrievals. The instrument design arose from trade studies between spectral resolution, spectral range, and instrument sensitivity and has now been validated by flight data acquired with the completed sensor. It offers a potential prototype for future space-based TIR instruments, which will require much higher spectral resolution than is currently available in order to address more detailed climate, anthropogenic, and solid Earth science questions.
