[Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose equations for narrowband-to-broadband (NTB) albedo conversion for glacier ice and snow for four types of satellite sensors : thematic mapper (TM), advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR), moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer (MISR). We do this on the basis of spectral albedos and incident spectral irradiances generated with radiative-transfer models of the (sub)surface (a two-stream model) and the atmosphere, respectively. First, we establish equations for reference values of atmospheric components and the surface elevation. These equations describe measurements with root-mean-square differences of ~0.016. We then show that the "reference equations" also perform well when total ozone and aerosol optical depth are changed with respect to the reference. The negative effect of humidity and elevation variations on the performance of the equations can be eliminated by adding a correction term. We argue that narrowband albedos are much less sensitive to variations in the incident spectral irradiance than broadband albedos. Hence, our conclusions about the effects of variations in atmospheric composition and elevation are also valid for equations for NTB conversion proposed in other papers. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a new image reconstruction scheme is devised for estimating a high-resolution temperature map of the top of the earth's atmosphere using the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imager infrared channels 4 and 5. By simultaneously interpolating the image while estimating temperature, the proposed algorithm achieves a more accurate estimate of the subpixel temperatures than could be obtained by performing these operations independently of one another. The proposed algorithm differs from other Bayesian-based image interpolation schemes in that it estimates brightness temperature as opposed to image intensity and incorporates a detailed optical model of the GOES multichannel imaging system. In order to test the effectiveness of the proposed technique, high-resolution estimates of cloudtop temperatures using GOES channels 4 and 5 are compared to temperature estimates obtained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). This test is achieved by examining sets of infrared data taken simultaneously by the GOES and AVHRR systems over the same geographic area. The AVHRR system collects longwave infrared data with a spatial resolution of 1km, which is higher than the 4km spatial resolution the GOES system achieves. In some cases, the estimated temperature differences between these systems are as high as 11.5 K. It is shown in this paper that the proposed algorithm improves the consistency between the cloudtop temperatures estimated with the GOES and AVHRR systems by allowing the GOES system to achieve substantially higher spatial resolution. [Termes IGN] image SeawifsRésumé : (Auteur) Multitemporal and multisatellite studies or comparisons between satellite data and local ground measurements require nowadays precise and automatic geometric correction of satellite images. This paper presents a fully automatic geometric correction system capable of georeferencing satellite images with high accuracy. An orbital prediction model, which provides initial earth locations, is combined with the proposed automatic contour-matching technique. This combination allows correcting the low-frequency error component, mainly due to timing and orbital model errors, as well as the high-frequency error component, due to variations in the spacecraft's attitude. The approach aims at exploiting the maximum reliable information in the image to guide the matching algorithm. The contour-matching process has three main steps: 1) estimation of the gradient energy map (edges) and detection of the cloudless (reliable) areas; 2) initialization of the contours positions; 3) estimation of the transformation parameters (affine model) using a contour optimization approach. Three different robust and automatic algorithms are proposed for optimization, and their main features are discussed. Finally, the performance of the three proposed algorithms is assessed using a new error estimation technique applied to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Sea-viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS), and multisensor AVHRR-SeaWiFS imagery.
