[Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new algorithm for the analysis of linear spectral mixtures in the thermal infrared domain, with the goal to jointly estimate the abundance and the subpixel temperature in a mixed pixel, i.e., to estimate the relative proportion and the temperature of each material composing the mixed pixel. This novel approach is a two-step procedure. First, it estimates the emissivity and the temperature over pure pixels using the standard temperature and emissivity separation (TES) algorithm. Second, it estimates the abundance and the subpixel temperature using a new unmixing physics-based model, called Thermal Remote sensing Unmixing for Subpixel Temperature (TRUST). This model is based on an estimator of the subpixel temperature obtained by linearizing the black body law around the mean temperature of each material. The abundance is then retrieved by minimizing the reconstruction error with the estimation of the subpixel temperatures. The TRUST method is benchmarked on simulated scenes against the fully constrained least squares unmixing applied on the radiance and on the estimation of surface emissivity using the TES algorithm. The TRUST method shows better results on pure and mixed pixels composed of two materials. TRUST also shows promising results when applied on thermal hyperspectral data acquired with the Thermal Airborne Spectrographic Imager during the Detection in Urban scenario using Combined Airborne imaging Sensors campaign and estimates coherent localization of mixed-pixel areas. [Termes IGN] Tamarix (genre)Résumé : (auteur) Defoliation by the northern tamarisk beetle (Diorhabda carinulata) causes changes in the reflectance of tamarisk (Tamarix spp.) canopies. Cross correlogram spectral matching was used to examine spectral separability of green, yellow desiccated, brown desiccated, and dead tamarisk canopy types. Using a feature selection technique (the instability index), four spectral regions were identified as important for canopy type discrimination, including one red (645-693 nm), one near infrared (735-946 nm), and two shortwave infrared regions (1,960-2,090 nm and 2,400-2,478 nm). The random forests decision tree algorithm was used to compare classification performances of full-range and feature-selected hyperspectral spectra as well as simulated WorldView-2 spectra. Classification results indicated that the process of feature selection can reduce data redundancy and computation time while improving accuracy of tamarisk canopy type classification. [Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) A modified version of the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) algorithm is presented for use in the angular normalization of surface reflectance data gathered by the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) aboard the geostationary Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites. We present early and provisional daily nadir BRDF-adjusted reflectance (NBAR) data in the visible and near-infrared MSG channels. These utilize the high temporal resolution of MSG to produce BRDF retrievals with a greatly reduced acquisition period than the comparable MODIS products while, at the same time, removing many of the angular perturbations present within the original MSG data. The NBAR data are validated against reflectance data from the MODIS instrument and in situ data gathered at a field location in Africa throughout 2008. It is found that the MSG retrievals are stable and are of high-quality across much of the SEVIRI disk while maintaining a higher temporal resolution than the MODIS BRDF products. However, a number of circumstances are discovered whereby the BRDF model is unable to function correctly with the SEVIRI observations-primarily because of an insufficient spread of angular data due to the fixed sensor location or localized cloud contamination. [Termes IGN] rayonnement infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) Many remote sensing applications involve the classification of anomalous responses as either objects of interest or clutter. This paper addresses the problem of anomaly classification in hyperspectral imagery (HSI) and focuses on robustly detecting disturbed earth in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectrum. Although disturbed earth yields a distinct LWIR signature that distinguishes it from the background, its distribution relative to clutter may vary over different environmental contexts. In this paper, a generic Bayesian framework is proposed for training context-dependent classification rules from wide-area airborne LWIR imagery. The proposed framework combines sparse classification models with either supervised or discriminative context identification to pool information across contexts and improve classification overall. Experiments are performed with data from a LWIR landmine detection system. Contexts are learned from endmember abundances extracted from the background near each detected anomaly. Classification performance is compared with single-classifier approaches using the same information as well as other baseline anomaly detectors from the literature. Results indicate that utilizing context for classifying anomalies in HSI could lead to more robust performance over varying terrain. [Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) This study integrated environmental variables together with high spectral resolution WorldView-2 imagery to detect and map Thaumastocoris peregrinus damage in Eucalypt plantation forests in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The WorldView-2 bands, vegetation indices and environmental variables were entered separately into PLS regression models to predict T. peregrinus damage. The datasets were then integrated to test the collective strength in predicting T. peregrinus damage. Important variables were identified by variable importance (VIP) scores and were re-entered into a PLS regression model. The VIP model was then extrapolated to map the severity of damage and predicted T. peregrinus damage with an R2 value of 0.71 and a RMSE of 3.26% on an independent test dataset. The red edge and near-infrared bands of the WorldView-2 sensor together with the temperature dataset were identified as important variables in predicting T. peregrinus damage. The results indicate the potential of integrating WorldView-2 data and environmental variables to improve the mapping and monitoring of insect outbreaks in plantation forests. The result is critical for plantation health monitoring using a new sensor which contains important vegetation wavelengths.
