[Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (Auteur) The international scientific community has called for more detailed data on vegetation fires to improve the understanding of their role in global atmospheric chemistry, and on fire itself as an ecosystem disturbance. The fire science community highlighted the value of information such as fire spatial distribution, timing, extent, energy release, burning efficiency and emissions. In order to obtain reliable information on these parameters, a combination of operational and experimental spaceborne sensors with in situ and airborne sensor measurements is required. A small satellite demonstrator mission on Bispectral InfraRed Detection (BIRD) was prepared by the Institute of Space Sensor Technology and Planetary Exploration of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It was successfully launched on 22 October 2001 into a 570km sun-synchronous orbit. This paper presents new thermal mapping results obtained with the Advanced BIRD Airborne Simulator (ABAS) during a flight campaign over controlled forest fires in the open coal mining region of the Brandenburg country in Germany on 23 August 2001. These data have been successfully used to retrieve the effective area and effective temperature of forest fires by means of the application of the bispectral subpixel method. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Using a global simulation of L-band (1.4 GHz) brightness temperature (TB) for two years (1987 and 1988), the relationship between L(band brightness temperatures and surface soil moisture was analyzed using simple regression models. The global TB dataset describes continental pixels at a halfdegree spatial resolution and accounts for withinpixel heterogeneity, based on 1-km resolution land cover maps. Two different statistical methods were investigated. First, a single regression model was obtained using a linear combination of TB indexes. This method consisted in retrieving surface soil moisture using the same global regression model for all the pixels. Second, a regression model was calibrated over each pixel using similar linear combinations of the TB indexes. In both cases, the influence of the radiometric noise on TB was investigated. Applying these two methods, the capability ,of L-band TB observations to monitor surface soil moisture vas evaluated at the global scale and during a two-year time period. Global maps of the estimated accuracy of the soil moisture retrievals were produced. These results contribute to better define the potential of the observations from future spaceborne missions, such as the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission Numéro de notice : A2003-252 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1109/TGRS.2003.813492 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2003.813492 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=22547

[Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (Auteur) Climate change studies require consistent, long time series, surface reflectance data. The characterization of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is important for normalizing the solar radiation reflected from the earth's surface. We evaluated four BRDF models to identify the preferred approach to the normalization of multiyear National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and SPOT4VEGETATION (VGT) composite images to a common illumination and viewing geometry. Four models by the following authors were included: Walthall, Ropjean, Ross-Li, and a new nonlinear temporal angular model (NTAM). NTAM accounts for hotspot effects and also responds to seasonal changes in land cover properties (using vegetation indexes as surrogate temporal measures). We compared the performance of the models under different scenarios of coefficient derivation and model application including model ability to reproduce theoretical BRDF curves, model consistency in single, multiyear, and incomplete sampling schemes, and comparison of AVMR and LANDSAT Thematic Mapper surface reflectance prior and after BRDF normalization. We found that in all the tests, NTAM yielded the best fits between the observed and estimated values. NTAM requires eight coefficients and a lengthier iterative procedure to derive the coefficients, but the resulting coefficients are applied to the entire growing season rather than one temporal window. NTAM also performed well for different sensors (AVHRR, VGT) and geographic areas (Canada, east Asia, southern United States). Our results contradict the often-encountered perception that semiempirical BRDF models for angular normalization are all similarly effective, and the research on this topic is mature. We also describe a procedure for routine normalization of satellite optical data. For northern ecosystems, the NTAM coefficients derived from AVHRR and VGT data for Canada are available via ftp://Ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca.
