[Termes IGN] teneur en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) To investigate whether the spatial and temporal resolution of current operational observing systems in the Western Mediterranean (WMed) region suffice to adequately represent the atmospheric processes responsible for the initiation and intensification of convection, a diagnostic study of the HyMex Intensive Observation Period 8 (IOP8) is performed. During the IOP8, heavy rainfall with intense lightning and consequent devastating flash floods occurred in the WMed region. The synergy of operational networks in the northern WMed, including Global Positioning System (GPS) stations, rain gauges, weather stations, lightning sensors and radiosondes, was used to document in detail the evolution of the heavy precipitation event. In general, the resolution of the aforementioned networks adequately sampled the temporal and spatial variability of the atmospheric water vapour, as well as the position of mesoscale convergence zones which played a key role in the initiation and evolution of convective systems in this case. Nevertheless, high uncertainty was associated with the existence and location of moisture convergence zones and wind convergence lines over the sea, reflecting the need for model analysis and remote‐sensing observations to complete the documentation of the event. The underlying determinants of this climatic debt are unknown and yet critical to understand the impacts of climate change on the present biota and improve forecasts of biodiversity changes. Here we assess determinants of climatic debt accumulated in French forest herbaceous plant communities between 1987 and 2008 (that is, a 1.05 °C mean difference between the observed and bioindicated temperatures). We show that warmer baseline conditions predispose plant communities to larger climatic debts, and that climate warming exacerbates this response. Forest plant communities, however, are absorbing part of the temperature increase mainly through the species’ ability to tolerate changing climate. As climate warming is expected to accelerate during the twenty-first century, plant migration and tolerance to climatic stresses probably will be insufficient to absorb this impact posing threats to the sustainability of forest plant communities. [Termes IGN] troposphèreRésumé : (auteur) Because of the unknown systematic errors and special satellite constellations in the Beidou system (BDS), it is difficult to quickly and reliably determine the ambiguity over long-range baselines in continuously operating reference station (CORS) network. This study seeks to improve the effectiveness and reliability of BDS ambiguity resolution (AR) by combining the geometry-free and ionosphere-free (GFIF) combination and multipath mitigation algorithm. The GFIF combination composed with three-frequency signals is free of distance-dependent errors and can be used to determine the narrow lane ambiguity. The presence of multipath errors means that not all ambiguities can be correctly achieved by rounding the averaged GFIF ambiguity series. A multipath model of the single-differenced (SD) GFIF combination from the previous period is established for each individual satellite. This model is subtracted from the SD GFIF combination for the current day to remove the effects of multipath errors. Using three triangle networks with lengths of approximately 120, 80 and 50 km, we demonstrate that the proposed method improves the AR performance. The ambiguity averaged first fixing time is typically less than 1801 s for inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites and less than 2007 s for the ∼42∘ elevation geostationary earth orbit (GEO) C02 satellite. However, it is more time consuming for the low-elevation GEO satellites C04 (∼18∘) and C05 (∼28∘). Kalman filtering is used to estimate the troposphere delays and two unfixed ambiguities by employing the ionosphere-free observations of all ambiguity-fixed/unfixed satellites. The experimental results show that only tens of seconds are required for AR in around 90 km baselines. [Termes IGN] teneur intégrée en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) In the framework of the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX) project, measurements from more than 1000 ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers located in the northwestern Mediterranean area are reprocessed using a single piece of GPS software for the period from 1 September 2012 to 31 March 2013. A special screening procedure is developed for the removal of outliers in the GPS Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) data. ZTD data are converted to integrated water vapour (IWV) using surface pressure information from an AROME-WMED operational analysis. The reprocessed ZTD and IWV data are used to assess the accuracy of the near-real time E-GVAP ZTD data assimilated in operational numerical weather prediction systems and to validate the IWV data from the AROME-WMED operational analysis and AROME-WMED reanalysis 1, and from radiosonde observations. The mean differences between E-GVAP and reprocessed ZTD data are not negligible and lie in the range from −3 to +3 mm. The standard deviations of differences are between 4 and 8 mm. The comparisons of IWV from AROME-WMED analyses and the reprocessed GPS data show high quality of the analyses where operational GPS data are assimilated and lower quality where no GPS data are assimilated. Small but significant biases are found in the radiosonde data during daytime (−0.5 to +1.4 kg m−2), but their origin is not determined so far. Thanks to the high spatial density of the reprocessed GPS stations, both the large-scale and small-scale variations in IWV can be documented. The case of HyMeX Intensive Observing Period 8 is presented as an example of a heavy precipitation event. This work suggests that improved quality of the humidity fields can be expected of the future AROME-WMED reanalysis 2 as a result of the assimilation of the reprocessed GPS data. The ground-based Water-vapour Raman Lidar (WALI), the airborne water-vapour lidar LEANDRE 2 and boundary-layer pressurized balloons were implemented during the first Special Observing Period and contributed to characterize water vapour variability in the vicinity of the Balearic Islands, together with the existing network of Global Positioning System receivers. Furthermore, analyses from regional and global numerical weather prediction (NWP) models (AROME-WMED, the ECMWF/IFS NWP system and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model) were also available over large domains encompassing part of or the entire western Mediterranean basin. We assess the consistency of water vapour mixing ratio (WVMR) profiles and integrated water vapour contents (IWVC) derived from the different datasets by comparing them to a common reference, the ground-based lidar WALI. We use consistency indicators such as root-mean-square errors, biases and correlations. Comparison between WVMR profiles from ground-based and airborne lidars (ground-based lidar and boundary-layer pressurized balloons) leads to a root-mean-square error lower than 1.6 g kg−1 (1.3 g kg−1) when the closest possible air masses are sampled. We observed a good agreement between the vertical WVMR profiles derived from WALI and the numerical models with correlations higher than 0.7 and root-mean-square errors lower than 2 g kg−1. Regarding IWVCs, the models exhibit biases less than 2 kg m−2, root-mean-square errors lower than 2.3 g kg−1 and correlations higher than 0.86 when compared to WALI. Finally, AROME-WMED 48 h forecasts were compared with WALI data composited over eleven 48 h periods. The quality of the forecast does not visibly degrade within the 48 h period from the initial analyses.
