It is necessary to predict high-accuracy ionospheric peak parameters for single frequency receivers. In this study, the state-of-the-art artificial neural network (ANN) technique optimized by the genetic algorithm is used to develop global ionospheric models for predicting foF2 and hmF2. The models are based on long-term multiple measurements including ionospheric peak frequency model (GIPFM) and global ionospheric peak height model (GIPHM). Predictions of the GIPFM and GIPHM are compared with the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model in 2009 and 2013 respectively. This comparison shows that the root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of GIPFM are 0.82 MHz and 0.71 MHz in 2013 and 2009, respectively. This result is about 20%–35% lower than that of IRI. Additionally, the corresponding hmF2 median errors of GIPHM are 20% to 30% smaller than that of IRI. Furthermore, the ANN models present a good capability to capture the global or regional ionospheric spatial-temporal characteristics, e.g., the equatorial ionization anomaly and Weddell Sea anomaly. The study shows that the ANN-based model has a better agreement to reference value than the IRI model, not only along the Greenwich meridian, but also on a global scale. The approach proposed in this study has the potential to be a new three-dimensional electron density model combined with the inclusion of the upcoming Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC-2) data. [Termes IGN] températureRésumé : (auteur) Glacial melt water is the key source for various socio-industrial and domestic activities in the Himalayas. Several recent studies suggest that glaciers are experiencing rapid melt. The glaciers health can be best assessed by mass balance. However, the mass balance investigations using in-situ methods for a large sample of glaciers are highly difficult in the Himalaya. Hence, remote sensing methods and modelling techniques are preferred. However, there is a lack of information on uncertainties associated with these methods in assessing the regional scale mass balance. Hence, these methods are applied to evaluate the regional scale mass budget of Baspa basin, Western Himalaya between 2000 and 2011. The total mass loss estimated using geodetic method amounts to −0.49 ± 0.1 gigatons, temperature index method to −0.43 ± 0.012 gigatons and AAR method to −0.36 ± 0.1 gigatons. Furthermore, this study highlights the limitations of these methods in mass loss evaluation in data scarce Himalayan regions. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Past demographic changes and current selection pressures determine the genetic variation displayed by Nothofagus species along rainfall gradients. Based on the diversity trends observed at candidate genes associated to drought stress, we inferred a differential species’ adaptive potential.
Context: Clinal genetic variation in natural populations could reflect either recent demographic history or the evolution of adapted genotypes along heterogeneous environments.
Aims: We describe genetic variation patterns in three Nothofagus species of South American temperate forests, growing along steep rainfall gradients. Our hypothesis is that the selection pressure along this gradient reinforces the genetic structure previously shaped by Pleistocene climate oscillations.
Methods: We screened variation along gradients at putative adaptive markers: candidate genes involved in response to drought, and EST-SSRs linked to drought stress genes. Genomic SSRs (gSSRs) were used to decouple the incidence of demographic events in the genetic structure.
Results: Genetic diversity at SSRs agreed with the putative location of cryptic Pleistocene refugia in Nothofagus. In addition, each species showed different trends for nucleotide diversity at candidate genes. Unbiased heterozygosity significantly correlated with precipitation at EST-SSRs in Nothofagus nervosa. We found evidences of balancing selection and several SNPs departed from neutral expectations.
Conclusions: Nothofagus genetic variability shows a strong imprint of demographic changes that reveals refugia location for the species during Pleistocene. This variability is modelled by environmental conditions across natural gradients, which impose selection pressure at genome regions related to stress response, providing clues about inter-specific differences in adaptive potential to water deficit.Numéro de notice : A2020-032 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-019-0908-x Date de publication en ligne : 10/01/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-019-0908-x Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=94489

[Termes IGN] visée verticaleRésumé : (Auteur) Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) using operational weather radars in the western United States is still a challenging issue due to the beam blockage in the mountainous areas and complex rainfall microphysics induced by the orographic enhancement. This article aims to improve operational radar rainfall estimates in complex terrain by incorporating auxiliary remote sensing observations. An innovative vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) correction scheme is developed for operational radar using observations from multiple vertically pointing profilers to represent the vertical structure of precipitation at various locations. A demonstration study in the Russian River basin in Northern California is detailed. Results show that the QPE performance is significantly improved after VPR correction, and this new VPR correction approach is superior to the conventional approach currently applied in the operational radar rainfall system. The normalized standard error of hourly rainfall estimates for the two precipitation events presented in this article is improved by ~20% after applying the proposed VPR correction scheme. [Termes IGN] variation diurneRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the limitation in the availability of airborne imagery data that are high in both spatial and temporal resolution, land surface temperature (LST) dense in both space and time can only be obtained through downscaling of frequently acquired LST with coarse resolution. Many conventional downscaling techniques are only feasible in an ideal situation, where land surface factors as LST predictors are continuously available for downscaling the LST. These techniques are also applied only at large scales ignoring sub-regional variations. Based upon unmixing based approaches, this study presents an LST downscaling workflow, where only the coarse resolution of 1 km LST image at the prediction time is required. The conceptual backbone of the study is assuming that the LST patterns are governed by thermal behaviors of a fixed set of temperature sensitive land surface components. In operation, the study focuses on central Netherlands covering an area of 90 × 90 km. The MODIS and Landsat imagery acquired simultaneously are used as a coarse-fine resolution pair to derive downscaling mechanism which is then applied to coarse imagery at a time with missing fine resolution imagery. First, an optimal number of thermal components are extracted at fine resolution through the application of the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). These components are assumed to possess unique temperature change patterns caused by combined effects of land cover change, radiance change, or both. Given the LST change and thermal components at coarse resolution, the LST change load of each component can then be obtained at the coarse resolution by solving a system of linear equations encoding thermal component-LST relationship. Such LST change load of thermal components is further unmixed to fine resolution and linearly weighted by the component distribution at fine resolution to obtain the fine resolution LST change. During the process, the coarse LST data is used directly without any resampling practice as shown in previous studies. Thus the technique is less time consuming even with a large downscaling factor of 30. The downscaled fine resolution LST represents an R-squared of over 0.7 outperforming classic downscaling techniques. The downscaled LST differentiates temperature over major land types and captures both seasonal and diurnal LST dynamics.
