[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Intra-annual oxygen isotope patterns of tree-ring cellulose from Pinus nigra subsp. laricio and Pinus pinaster along an elevation gradient can be divided into four distinct patterns ((1) high values in the beginning of the tree ring, declining trend afterwards; (2) low values in the beginning, increasing trend afterwards; (3) high values in the middle of the tree ring; (4) declining trend over the whole tree ring). These patterns reflect the dependency on local site conditions and different water sources.
Context: Intra-annual oxygen isotope chronologies from tree-ring cellulose can serve as a proxy for past climate conditions at inter- or even intra-seasonal resolution.
Aims: We explore the potential of these chronologies from pine trees (Pinus nigra J.F. Arn subsp. laricio (Poiret) Maire var Corsicana Hyl. and Pinus pinaster Aiton) growing on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, France, along an elevation gradient ranging from sea level to 1600 m asl.
Methods: We developed high-resolution intra-annual oxygen isotope chronologies from tree-ring cellulose of eight trees from five sites along the elevation gradient. The analysis period covers the decade 2007–2016 for seven trees and the period 1987–2016 for one tree, respectively.
Results: The chronologies show a high variability between trees, sites, and years. We identified four different intra-annual oxygen isotope patterns which reflect the dependency of tree growth on different water sources (precipitation during the growing season vs. deeper soil water reservoirs) and climate conditions during the growth season. Trees at coastal sites have access to groundwater, while trees growing in high elevations mostly depend on precipitation during the growth season as water source.
Conclusion: The different patterns can be attributed to the use of different water sources. The intra-annual chronology covering 30 years indicates an increasing frequency of dry-warm summers after 2007.Numéro de notice : A2019-304 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-019-0860-9 Date de publication en ligne : 29/07/2019 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-019-0860-9 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=93237

[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Characterizing snowmelt both spatially and temporally from in situ observation remains a challenge. Available sensors (i.e., sonic ranger, lidar, airborne photogrammetry) provide either time series of local point measurements or sporadic surveys covering larger areas. We propose a methodology to recover from a minimum of three synchronized time-lapse cameras changes in snow depth and snow cover extent over area smaller or equivalent to 0.12 km2. Our method uses photogrammetry to compute point clouds from a set of three or more images and automatically repeat this task for the entire time series. The challenges were (1) finding an optimal experimental setup deployable in the field, (2) estimating the error associated with this technique, and (3) being able to minimize the input of manual work in the data processing pipeline. Developed and tested in the field in Finse, Norway, over 1 month during the 2018 melt season, we estimated a median melt of 2.12 ± 0.48 m derived from three cameras 1.2 km away from the region of interest. The closest weather station recorded 1.94 m of melt. Other parameters like snow cover extent and duration could be estimated over a 300 × 400m region. The software is open source and applicable to a broader range of geomorphologic processes like glacier dynamic, snow accumulation, or any other processes of surface deformation, with the conditions of (1) having fixed visible points within the area of interest and (2) resolving sufficient surface textures in the photographs. [Termes IGN] tenseurRésumé : (Auteur) Unlike satellite earth observation, multispectral images acquired by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) provide great opportunities to monitor land surface conditions also in cloudy or overcast weather conditions. This is especially relevant for high latitudes where overcast and cloudy days are common. However, multispectral imagery acquired by miniaturized UAS sensors under such conditions tend to present low brightness and dynamic ranges, and high noise levels. Additionally, cloud shadows over space (within one image) and time (across images) are frequent in UAS imagery collected under variable irradiance and result in sensor radiance changes unrelated to the biophysical dynamics at the surface. To exploit the potential of UAS for vegetation mapping, this study proposes methods to obtain robust and repeatable reflectance time series under variable and low irradiance conditions. To improve sensor sensitivity to low irradiance, a radiometric pixel-wise calibration was conducted with a six-channel multispectral camera (mini-MCA6, Tetracam) using an integrating sphere simulating the varying low illumination typical of outdoor conditions at 55oN latitude. The sensor sensitivity was increased by using individual settings for independent channels, obtaining higher signal-to-noise ratios compared to the uniform setting for all image channels. To remove cloud shadows, a multivariate statistical procedure, Tucker tensor decomposition, was applied to reconstruct images using a four-way factorization scheme that takes advantage of spatial, spectral and temporal information simultaneously. The comparison between reconstructed (with Tucker) and original images showed an improvement in cloud shadow removal. Outdoor vicarious reflectance validation showed that with these methods, the multispectral imagery can provide reliable reflectance at sunny conditions with root mean square deviations of around 3%. The proposed methods could be useful for operational multispectral mapping with UAS under low and variable irradiance weather conditions as those prevalent in northern latitudes. [Termes IGN] Toscane (Italie)Résumé : (auteur) The climate of a city influences the ways in which its outdoor spaces are used. Especially, public spaces intended for use by pedestrians and cyclists, such as parks, squares, residential and commercial streets, and foot and cycle paths will be used and enjoyed more frequently if they have a comfortable and healthy climate. Due to the predicted global temperature increase, urban climate is likely to become more uncomfortable, especially in summer when an increase in heat stress is expected. Urban forestry has been proposed as one approach for mitigating the human health consequences of increased temperature resulting from climate change. The aims of the current research were to (a) provide a transferable methodology useful for analyzing the effect of urban trees on surface temperature reduction, particularly in public spaces, and (b) provide high-resolution urban mapping for adaptation strategies to climate change based on green space projects. To achieve the established aims, we developed a methodology that uses multisource data: LiDAR data, high-resolution Landsat imagery, global climate model data from CMIP5 (IPPC Fifth Assessment), and data from meteorological stations. The proposed model can be a useful tool for validating the efficiency of design simulations of new green spaces for temperature mitigation. [Termes IGN] TéhéranRésumé : (Auteur) Evapotranspiration is considered to be an important component of allocating water to agricultural sector; therefore, the more accurate this parameter is, the more optimized the water use can be. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data (A and B), both separately and combined, in potential evapotranspiration (ETp) and single crop coefficient (Kc) estimations. Field measurements such as crop height, leaf area index (LAI), land surface temperature (LST), air temperature above canopy (AT), and spectral data were exploited in the evaluating process throughout the entirety of 2017–18 growing season under winter wheat and barley cultivations in the Agricultural Research Farms of the University of Tehran. The novel method of Multi-Sensor Data Fusion using the Priestly-Taylor equation was taken into practice for satellite-based ETp (MSDF-ET) calculation from the combination of MODIS thermal and Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 multispectral data. Thermal images were downscaled by the means of the TsHARP algorithm. Thus, prior to ETp calculation, the thermal sharpening algorithm calculated using different spectral indices (SI) was assessed. The SI included NDVI, SAVI, SR, NDWI, NDWIg, and LSWI. The subsequent results were representative of the LSWI qualification under both Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 conditions against thermal and spectral measurements. Also the satellite-based ETp strongly correlated with the ETp derived from the field data illuminating the promising accuracy of the MSDF-ET method in both Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data. In the end, the time series of Kc obtained from the combination of satellites were fairly indicative of the real-world variations under different vegetation cover and crop growth stages. Overall, using Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 products in integration with each other could significantly result in more reliable decisions in agricultural water resources management.
