[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Comparing the growth rate of natural forest and plantation forest may be useful to better understand rates of carbon sequestration and carbon turnover. However, the large-scale patterns of biomass growth rates in China’s forests are still not well defined. We analyzed the growth rates of forest leaves, branches, stems, and roots across forest communities in China by using data collection, collation, and systematic analysis of published research and our unpublished data. The biomass growth rates in all forests exhibited negative latitudinal trends and negative altitudinal trends, with significant influence from climatic variables and stand characteristics. Stand characteristics explained more variation in growth rates of forest biomass than did climatic variables, and growth rates of forest leaves, branches, stems, and roots varied in relation to climate, stand characteristics, and forest origin. The cross-validated results of stepwise multiple regression (SMR) models and neural network models (NNM) indicated that the prediction accuracy of growth rate of forest biomass by NNM was better than that of the SMR models. Our results improve understanding of the environmental factors affecting Chinese forest growth and inform efforts to model dynamics of carbon accumulation in China’s forests. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the past few decades, temperate forests have been negatively altered by numerous anthropogenic activities and by the impact of ongoing climate change. These changes may require management actions to help preserve some forest tree species. In this sense, highly-detailed knowledge of tree growth and survival across territorial and climatic gradients will be important for forest conservation. We developed a novel approach to determine the optimal zones of forest growth and expansion through climate suitability maps, using a dense tree-ring network of four forest species in Moncayo Natural Park and high-resolution climate data. Our results showed that the mixed-effects models developed using climate data and tree size were able to predict between 65 and 80% of growth variability along the climatic gradient. All studied species were influenced by climate, and the relationship between growth and climate significantly differed along the prevailing climate gradient. Moreover, the suitability maps showed that the current species distribution is limited, and their application may serve as a tool for adaptive management in forests subjected to climate change. [Termes IGN] teneur en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Since many years, the GNSS has been regarded by the meteorological community as one of the systems for atmospheric water vapour remote sensing. Time series of wet delays, estimated as by-products of accurate positioning, have been assimilated into numerical weather prediction models. However, a dedicated use the system for water vapour monitoring is still under investigation. Ad hoc dense networks have been designed and implemented to collect data at a high spatial resolution, baseline lengths lower than 10 km, with the aim of describing the high spatial and temporal variability of tropospheric water vapour. Within this framework, the paper reports a study on how the positioning strategy affects the estimated coordinates and tropospheric parameters. The study was conducted on the data collected by an experimental network of geodetic receivers, used as single or dual frequency ones. More specifically, investigations were made on the use of L1-only or iono-free combinations in differential positioning of receivers 100 to 10 km apart, finding that L1-only data provide more accurate results. Therefore, comparisons between local coordinates and ZWD obtained from relative and absolute positioning were performed to provide the statistics of the differences; the agreement between the results for short baselines is always better than 1 cm standard deviation. In order to assess the differences in the results that can be obtained from the two strategies when applied to the same observation set, a further comparison was carried out in terms of baseline components and ZWD increments. It results that, even for dense networks, the differential approach produces accurate results without losing information compared to the absolute one. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The expansion of spruce-dominated forestry in Southern Sweden during the twentieth century has led to a considerable amount of oak (Quercus robur L.) woodlands being converted into stands dominated by planted spruce. The thinning of spruces around oak trees is currently done in Sweden to improve local diversity of insects, oak growing conditions and eventually decrease their mortality. To evaluate the effect of these treatments, we dendrochronologically studied growth of old (100–200 years old) oaks subjected to thinning of different intensity at nine locations in southern Sweden, and compared them to oaks located in nearby pastures. The overall pattern suggests that commonly adopted thinning intensities do not significantly affect oak growth. Oak growth was positively related to oak age and negatively to the amount of dead oak crown. Analyses of correlations between oak growth and summer drought conditions, as reflected by location-specific chronologies of the Monthly Drought Code (MDC), indicated that older trees exhibited generally negative correlations, whereas the correlation remained generally positive for the younger trees, both inside and outside forest stands. We propose that removal of spruces should be primarily done around older and healthier-looking trees.
