[Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) Centimetre level precision mapping is essential for many applications such as land-use, infrastructure inspection, cultural heritage preservation, and construction site monitoring. However, the acquisition and its preparation (in particular the setting of a ground control point network (GCPs)) are still expensive or even impossible in cluttered or dangerous areas. The recent development of UAVs together with the miniaturization of the sensors is a promising evolution for reducing costs and expand opportunities. The sensors embedded on the drone: GNSS antenna, IMU, camera and (optional) LIDAR are light and often low-cost. The low quality of their raw measurements must be counterbalanced by their rigorous modeling in order to obtain accurate final results: if we cannot expect the sensors to be error-free, one must model these in order to correct them. This is achieved by in-situ calibration or on a dedicated calibration field, together with a rigorous fusion of the raw data acquired by the different sensors with the so-called bundle-adjustment method. This thesis proposes several models to describe the behavior of the sensors, in order to hybridize them rigorously in the bundle-adjustment. Consistent datasets have been acquired on the field specifically to assess the relevance of both the sensor models and their hybridizing in complex photogrammetric processing. The contribution of this thesis could be divided into two mains categories. On one hand, this thesis suggests tools and recommendation to improve directly the procedures achieved by end-users using current UAV-mapping commercial solutions (in particular for the GCPs placement, for the choice of the camera calibration and model and for the flight-plan). On the other hand, this thesis put forward exotic methods (methods considered as exotic at the time of the writing of the thesis) such as Photo-LIDAR hybridizing and collaborative mapping achieved by a terrestrial-aerial tandem (a terrestrial vehicle holding a LIDAR, GNSS, imaging and inertial sensors followed by a drone conceived to proceed to airborne photogrammetry) or an aerial-aerial tandem (two drones flying in formation to proceed to airborne photogrammetry). The contribution of this thesis will permit to reduce costs, to improve the quality of mapping products and to enlarge the possibilities of mapping: in particular, map cluttered or inaccessible zones which are nowadays considered as difficult or even impossible to map. Long-term interactions between society, mountain ecosystems and glaciers in the region raise important questions on the future evolution of glaciers and their derived environmental and socioeconomical impacts. In order to correctly assess the regional response of glaciers in the French Alps to climate change, there is a need for adequate modelling tools. In this work, we explore new ways to tackle both glacier evolution and glacio-hydrological modelling at a regional scale. Glacier evolution modelling has traditionally been performed using empirical or physical approaches, which are becoming increasingly challenging to optimize with the ever growing amount of available data. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first effort ever to apply deep learning (i.e. deep artificial neural networks) to simulate the evolution of glaciers. Since both the climate and glacier systems are highly nonlinear, traditional linear mass balance models offer a limited representation of climate-glacier interactions. We show how important nonlinearities in glacier mass balance are captured by deep learning, substantially improving model performance over linear methods. This novel method was first applied in a study to reconstruct annual mass balance changes for all glaciers in the French Alps for the 1967-2015 period. Using climate reanalyses, topographical data and glacier inventories, we demonstrate how such an approach can be successfully used to reconstruct large-scale mass balance changes from observations. This study also offered new insights on how glaciers evolved in the French Alps during the last half century, confirming the rather neutral observed mass balance rates in the 1980s and displaying a well-marked acceleration in mass loss from the 2000s onwards. Important differences between regions are found, with the Mont-Blanc massif presenting the lowest mass loss and the Chablais being the most affected one. Secondly, we applied this modelling framework to simulate the future evolution of all glaciers in the region under multiple (N=29) climate change scenarios. Our estimates indicate that most ice volume in the region will be lost by the end of the 21st century independently from future climate scenarios. We predict average glacier volume losses of 74%, 80% and 88% under RCP 2.6 (n=3), RCP 4.5 (n=13) and RCP 8.5 (n=13), respectively. By the end of the 21st century the French Alps will be largely ice-free, with glaciers only remaining in the Mont-Blanc and Pelvoux massifs. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) Forest canopy structure is an important parameter in multipurpose forest management. An understanding of forest structure plays a particularly important role in the management of uneven-aged forests. The identification of vertical and horizontal variations in forest canopy structure using a ground-based survey is resource intensive, hence often demands for alternative data sources. In this study, one of the advanced remote sensing (RS) techniques, i.e. digital aerial photogrammetry was used to characterize forest canopy structure in a mixed conifer–broadleaf forest. We used aerial imagery acquired with a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform to produce RS metrics that could be used to classify and map forest structure types at landscape scale. Our results demonstrated that few structural and spectral metrics derived from UAV photogrammetric data, e.g. mean height, standard deviation of height, canopy cover, and percentage broadleaf vegetation cover, could characterize the forest structure across landscapes, particularly at the forest management compartment level, in a limited amount of time. We used cluster analysis for classification of forest structure types and identified five forest structure classes with varying levels of forest canopy structural complexity: (1) short, open-canopy, conifer-dominated structure; (2) short, dense-canopy, broadleaf-dominated structure; (3) tall, closed-canopy, broadleaf-dominated structure; (4) very tall, closed-canopy, conifer-dominated structure with a relatively high degree of variation in canopy height; and (5) very tall, closed-canopy, conifer-dominated structure with a relatively low degree of variation in canopy height. These classes showed relationships with forest management activities (e.g. selection harvesting) and natural disturbances (e.g. typhoon damage). Spatial distribution of forest canopy structural complexity that was revealed in this study is capable of providing important information for forest management planning and habitat modelling. Further, the simple, and flexible data-driven method used in this study to characterize forest structure has the potential to be applied with necessary changes over larger landscapes and different forest types for characterizing and mapping forest structural complexity. [Termes IGN] quasi-géoïdeRésumé : (auteur) This study compares four approaches of local quasigeoid modelling using GNSS/levelling height anomalies. The first two approaches utilise only a dense network of points with known GNSS/levelling height anomalies and the EGM2008 model. They are based on the interpolation of residual values of height anomalies by applying the least squares collocation (LSC) and the thin plate spline (TPS). The next two approaches use additional data in the form of surface gravity data and the digital elevation model. One of these approaches is based on the classical Molodensky method combined with LSC. The other approach utilises the method of geophysical gravity data inversion (GGI). During the research, the authors used a local network of points with precisely defined GNSS/levelling height anomalies located in South-Western Poland. They obtained comparable results for all tested approaches at the maximum analysed density of GNSS/levelling points (about 1point30km2). The differences between the modelling results became apparent only with an increase in the distance between the GNSS/levelling data points and the reduced accuracy of the used global geopotential model.
