[Termes IGN] reliefRésumé : (Auteur) This paper demonstrates the ability to identify representative ground elevation and vegetation height estimates within the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite/Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (ICESat/GLAS) waveforms for an area of mixed vegetation and varied topography. Estimating vegetation height within large-footprint Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) waveforms relies on the ability to estimate the uppermost canopy surface (signal beginning) and an elevation representing the ground surface, both of which are influenced by vegetation properties and topographic slope. We examined sources of uncertainty for vegetation height estimation from ICESat/GLAS data using airborne LiDAR data, field measurements and the FLIGHT radiative transfer model. In comparison with an independent 10-m resolution digital terrain model (DTM), a method using Gaussian decomposition of the satellite waveform produced a mean bias of -0.10 m when estimating ground elevation. A second method of estimating vegetation height using waveform extent and a terrain index effectively removed slope as an error source but produced a greater ground surface offset (-0.83 m). The two methods of estimating vegetation height compared well with airborne LiDAR estimates (correlation coefficient (R2) = 0.68, root mean square error (RMSE) = 4.4 m and R2 = 0.61, RMSE = 4.9 m, respectively). However, the complex interplay of the structural and optical properties of the intercepted vegetation and slope requires further understanding. A tool such as FLIGHT provides a useful means to explore the sensitivity of the waveform to both vegetation properties and topographic slope. [Termes IGN] valléeRésumé : (Auteur) As an important method of terrain representation, a DEM usually needs to be generalized at multiple resolutions in order to adapt to different applications. The preservation of main landscape features is an important constraint in DEM generalization. The traditional generalization method based on signal processing by resampling or low-pass filtering is just a data compression operation rather than the abstraction of real information. This study develops a structured analysis method to generalize DEM data through the identification of minor valleys and filling the corresponding depression positions. The generalization process has two steps: geographic decision and geometric operation. According to their hydrological significance, the unimportant valley branches are detected and their corresponding coverage is filled by raising the terrain to make the terrain surface smoother. In contrast to the conventional algorithms based on image processing, this method is able to retain the main geographical characteristics more effectively in terrain representation. [Termes IGN] point d'intérêtRésumé : (Auteur) Although automated object surface reconstruction via feature-based matching is commonly employed in both stereoscopic close range and topographic photogrammetry, it has rarely been used in conjunction with multi-image, convergent photogrammetric networks. A prerequisite for feature-based matching of distinct points is the application of interest operators to provide the dense arrays of candidate feature points within the images forming the network. This paper describes an evaluation of three interest operators, the Förstner, SUSAN and FAST algorithms, the aim being to assess which is optimal for feature-based matching in convergent close range photogrammetry. Following a brief review of the development of interest operators, a description of the three operators is provided, with the recently developed FAST operator being discussed in more detail. The merits of image pre-processing via the Wallis filter are also outlined, after which the performance of the interest operators is experimentally assessed within an eight-image network on the basis of accuracy of interest-point localisation, detection rate and speed. The findings of the evaluation are that, of the Förstner, SUSAN and FAST operators, the FAST, which has not been employed to a significant extent in photogrammetry to date, is optimal for feature-based matching in multi-image close range networks. [Termes IGN] profondeurRésumé : (Auteur) The metric nature of stereoscopic depth perception has remained an enigma. Several mathematical formulations proposed for measuring the stereoscopic effect have not shown to be reliable. This may be due to the lack of a conceptual distinction between the 3D model geometrically obtained by intersection of visual rays (geometric model), and the 3D model perceived in the observer's mind (perceptual model). Based on the assumption that retinal parallax is the only source of information on depth available to the brain, we developed an equation that shows real and perceptual space to be connected by a logarithmic function. This relationship has allowed us to formulate the vertical exaggeration for all sorts of stereoscopic conditions, including natural stereovision. The obtained formulations might involve possibilities of technological applications, such as the artificial recreation of a natural stereovision effect, ant the design of stereoscopic instruments with a desired degree of vertical exaggeration.
