[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Quantitative classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM and ETM +) imagery can provide a very useful medium for showing urban change at a watershed scale. It shows both the nature and the degree of urbanization with a resolution equivalent to that of the original TM image. Estimates of urbanization-related factors such as surface imperviousness and canopy cover can be coupled to illustrate the process of urban growth in the watershed using change vector analysis. When used together and combined with standard GIS data sets such as digital line graphs and digital elevation models. Quantitative classification can provide the parameters needed to run standard hydrological models that can be used to describe or to forecast the effects of urbanization on area streams. Watersheds provide a meaningful scale for the analysis of the connections between urbanization and the environmental changes it brings. The study area for this paper is the Tinker's Creek watershed in northeast Ohio, USA. Tinker's Creek is one of the largest and most varied watersheds in the area, and it is subject to significant urbanization stress. Urbanization in the watershed is reflected in four TM images of northeast Ohio over a 15 year period (1984-1999). Quantitative classification provides a rich and detailed picture of urbanization over the time period of the study. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We examine the utility of linear mixture modelling in the sub-pixel analysis of Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) imagery to estimate the three key land cover components in an urban/suburban setting: impervious surface, managed/unmanaged lawn and tree cover. The relative effectiveness of two different endmember sets was also compared. The interior endmember set consisted of the median pixel value of the training pixels of each land cover and the exterior endmember set was the extreme pixel value. As a means of accuracy assessment, the resulting land cover estimates were compared with independent estimates obtained from the visual interpretation of digital orthophotography and classified IKONOS imagery. Impervious surface estimates from the Landsat ETM showed a high degree of similarity (RMS error (RMSE) within approximately + 10 to 15%) to that obtained using high spatial resolution digital orthophotography and IKONOS imagery. The partition of the vegetation component into tree vs grass cover was more problematic due to the greater spectral similarity between these land cover types with RMSE of approximately + 12 to 22%. The interior endmember set appeared to provide better differentiation between grass and urban tree cover than the exterior endmember set. The ability to separate the grass vs tree components in urban vegetation is of major importance to the study of the urban/suburban ecosystems as well as watershed assessment. [Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) Surface roughness at the scale of 10-2-10-1 m can be estimated using the ratio (RR) between surface-reflected solar radiance measured from two view angles at nearly the same time. As RR is primarily a function of the difference between effective sub-pixel shading observed from the two view-angles, the divergence from unity RR values, which are expected for smooth Lambertian surfaces (they have no shadows), was found to be proportional to roughness at the 10-2-10-1 m scale of geomorphic desert surfaces. Ground-based RR values at 1-m resolution, as well as remotely acquired RR values at 4-, 15- and 50-m resolutions, were compared with observed surface roughness in two hyperarid test sites, located in Death Valley, California, USA and the southem Negev Desert in Israel. The ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) 15-m stereoscopic capability is identified as an effective resource for obtaining relative subpixel surface-roughness estimates that are largely independent of surface composition and relatively insensitive to atmospheric effects.
