[Termes IGN] sinuositéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyses the structure of roads (directed) and the pedestrian (undirected) networks in Lausanne (Switzerland). Centrality and sinuosity indexes are computed to perform spatial analysis at various scales. The study shows that the sinuosity index varies a lot at local (pedestrian) scale. The link between these variations and the underlying street patterns is investigated. The method also suggests that the comparison between Euclidean and shortest path distances can be used to improve pedestrian network by creating promising shortcuts, or alternatively to detect major network topological errors. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) A methodology for judging the performance of simulation models that involve linear features is presented taking as its test case a model that produces logging road networks. The approach combines existing methods of accuracy assessment, based on the so-called epsilon band, with the principle of statistical inference. This requires adapting neutral models from landscape ecology to generate a bootstrapped probability distribution reflecting the probabilistic characteristics of sto-chastic networks. The distribution is then used for inferential hypothesis testing, taking as its "null" hypothesis that a net-work has been produced randomly. The assessment method-ology is used to evaluate the road network simulation model under six different parameterizations. Results are compared to findings obtained by the use of fuzzy similarity metrics. The paper argues that the epsilon band method provides confi-dence that model performance departs significantly from a randomized process, and that conclusions are free of at least one class of spurious results. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports on progress in generalization and selective feature removal for a subset of fundamental base map layers that enables competent mapping through scales ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:1,000,000. Thinning and partitioning methods are applied to road features and labels for The National Map of the United States. Roads are thinned adaptively using the ArcGIS Thin Road Network geoprocessing tool, which removes features by feature hierarchy and network connectivity, yet preserves characteristic urban/rural local density patterns that can be lost through simple category removals. The paper describes thinning for label hierarchies within road categories, improved preference in placement for more important road labels, and selective removal of labels through scale. Use of the Radical Law to guide matches between thinning parameters and suitable scales of representation also is shown. Inspection of graphic results of these treatments can help to establish parameters for automated base map design for US topographic mapping.
