[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) This document presents some works on automation of generalisation tools in GIS’s. Though this is a very usual cartographic process, GIS’s now offer few algorithms on the subject. Many algorithms exist in research area, especially for line generalisation. Nevertheless none of them works efficiently for all types of objects of any geographic database, nor for all types of cartographic specifications for the target map such as road map, land-use map, topographic map. Moreover, algorithms are efficient on different parts of an object. For example some line generalisation algorithms perform well when they consider entire lines, while others success when they consider a part of a line such as bends, bends series, regular areas. This article first presents a way to analyse the geometrical characteristics of a road in order to focus on it at a suitable level where an algorithm can be efficient. Then it proposes to determine which algorithm is the most appropriate to generalise a focused part of a road, with full respect to the cartographic representation at a given scale and a given symbolisation. This work has been fully implemented (GALBE process) and tested on actual data. The results, presented here, are very encouraging to validate this kind of approach for a fully automated line generalisation process in GIS’s.
