[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) This study proposes a landscape metrics-based method for model performance evaluation of land change simulation models. To quantify model performance at both landscape and class levels, a set of composition- and configuration-based metrics including number of patches, class area, landscape shape index, mean patch area and mean Euclidean nearest neighbour distance were employed. These landscape metrics provided detailed information on simulation success of a cellular automata-Markov chain (CA-Markov) model standpoint of spatial arrangement of the simulated map versus the corresponding reference layer. As a measure of model simulation success, mean relative error (MRE) of the metrics was calculated. At both landscape and class levels, the MRE values were accounted for 22.73 and 10.2%, respectively, which are further categorised into qualitative measurements of model simulation performance for simple and quick comparison of the results. Findings of the present study depict a hierarchical and multi spatial level assessment of model performance. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) This study aimed at testing the hypothesis that augmenting Landsat TM-based models for predicting soil organic carbon (SOC) with auxiliary data about variables that might affect the spatial distribution of SOC might improve the predictability of these models in the Zarqa Basin in Jordan (a typical semi-arid watershed) and enable them to be used for implementing carbon crediting programs in semi-arid environments. Six modeling procedures, namely stepwise regression, partial least squares, recursive partitioning analysis, screening regression analysis, artificial neural networks, and combined models, were calibrated and validated for the basin and for the land cover types that exist in the basin. Although none of the developed models was powerful for predicting SOC, artificial neural networks models were more applicable specifically in agricultural lands. However, the margins of error associated with the best models were high, and hence hindered the applicability of these models in carbon crediting programs in semi-arid environments. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) It remains difficult to develop a clear understanding of geo-located events and their relationships to one another, particularly when it comes to identifying patterns of events in less-structured textual sources, such as news feeds and social media streams. Here we present a geovisualization tool that can leverage computational methods, such as T-pattern analysis, for extracting patterns of interest from event data streams. Our system, STempo, includes coordinated-view geovisualization components designed to support visual exploration and analysis of event data, and patterns extracted from those data, in terms of time, geography, and content. Through a user evaluation, we explore the usability and utility of STempo for understanding patterns of recent political, social, economic, and military events in Syria. [Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (Auteur) The correct and accurate assessments of growing stock (stem volume) in combination with forest growth predictions from models are essential for sustainable forest management. Currently, no such information exists for the broadleaved forests of Bhutan. This study evaluates the important factors of individual tree growth for broadleaved species in Dagana, Bhutan. Data were collected from 96 inventory plots covering forest stand information, tree and stand parameters along with 5-year tree growth increment information from tree cores. Due to the large number of tree species (87), four species groups were created using principal component and cluster analysis to simplify the calibration of individual tree basal area increment (BAI) models. The main determinants of tree growth were shown to be tree size variables and competition within a forest stand. Distance dependent competition indices showed higher correlation to growth than distance independent competition indices. The resulting increment models provided consistent and unbiased estimates of individual tree BAI predictions. Increasing competition levels reduce the productivity of the individual trees. This emphasises the need for crown release to obtain higher individual tree growth. We demonstrate that the BAI models developed in this study can be used to predict tree growth by species group according to different stand density conditions and, if they are verified on a wider scale, could form the basis of sustainable forest management in Bhutan. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Fine-scale population distribution data at the building level play an essential role in numerous fields, for example urban planning and disaster prevention. The rapid technological development of remote sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) in recent decades has benefited numerous population distribution mapping studies. However, most of these studies focused on global population and environmental changes; few considered fine-scale population mapping at the local scale, largely because of a lack of reliable data and models. As geospatial big data booms, Internet-collected volunteered geographic information (VGI) can now be used to solve this problem. This article establishes a novel framework to map urban population distributions at the building scale by integrating multisource geospatial big data, which is essential for the fine-scale mapping of population distributions. First, Baidu points-of-interest (POIs) and real-time Tencent user densities (RTUD) are analyzed by using a random forest algorithm to down-scale the street-level population distribution to the grid level. Then, we design an effective iterative building-population gravity model to map population distributions at the building level. Meanwhile, we introduce a densely inhabited index (DII), generated by the proposed gravity model, which can be used to estimate the degree of residential crowding.
