[Termes IGN] ThaïlandeRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study is to estimate the residual surface soil moisture of rice fields after harvesting, in Northeast Thailand, using Cband SAR images. Such information is use 1 to determine possibilities of cultivating additional shortcycle crops after the harvesting of the main rice crop. To accomplish this objective this study exploits three Cband SAR images acquired over the test area along with simultaneous ground measurements collected in support of analysis of the SAR images. The main parameters measured on the ground were: the volumetric moisture content of the soil using time domain reflectrometry (TDR), the surface roughness, using profile data, and residue cover. Other field environmental factors that might affect radar backscattering, including the topography of rice terraces (elevation, slope, and aspect), bund height between rice fields, soil types, and density of sparse tree stands were also acquired and registered to the image data. Before the analysis, the SAR images were calibrated, registered, and then filtered using multitemporal and spatial filters to reduce variability of the radar backscattering coefficient due to speckle. The measured soil moisture values were then correlated with the radar backscattering coefficients of the experimental plots and the results interpreted in terms of the main environmental factors. Varying residue cover and field aspect angles were found to significantly affect the relationship between radar backscatter and soil moisture content and therefore had to be taken into account before inverting the image data into soil moisture maps. Overall it was found that two soil moisture classes could reliably be separated using the SAR images, and that soil moisture maps could be obtained through a simple inversion technique based on applying a threshold to the SAR images. Analyses of these resulting moisture maps indicate that SAR data is useful to monitor and map surface soil moisture in rice fields after harvest.

In this paper, a relationship between annual ET, integrated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Relative Moisture Index (RMI) was established. Based on this relationship, the spatial distribution and dynamic change of annual ET were estimated for the Yellow River Basin, China from 1982 to 2000. Our analyses involved the use of integrated NDVI data, monthly mean air temperature, and precipitation. Our results showed that the integrated AVHRR NDVI can be used to effectively estimate annual ET in the Yellow River Basin, with an accuracy over 90% for the whole basin. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Preservation of cultivated land is one of China's four basic strategic policies. Timely land use monitoring is a prerequisite of cultivated land management and sustainable utilization. Using digital satellite remote sensing techniques, the intention is to develop a workable procedure for cultivated land change detection in the Yellow River delta region. Four detection methods were assessed. The assessment, in general, suggests that it is difficult to find a single efficient method for cultivated land change detection in the study area, where spectral confusion is widespread due to soil salinization and juxtaposed land use patterns. The knowledge-based visual change detection and classification-result overlay methods are more appropriate than the multi-temporal composite and classification, and image ratioing. The latter two methods are useful and efficient when remote sensing data acquired in the suitable season are available, and distinct spectral characteristics of different land use types exist. The results show that the area of cultivated land in this region decreased by 5321.8 ha over the period 1987 to 1998, i.e. 483.8ha every year, mainly concentrated in the central paddy field region and northeast dry land region. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this study is to evaluate the hazard of landslides at Boun, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. Landslide locations were identified in the Boun area from interpretation of aerial photographs and field surveys. The topographic, soil, forest, geologic, lineament and land cover data were collected, processed and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and remote sensing data. The factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect and curvature of the topography, were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective soil thickness were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of timber were extracted from the forest database. The lithology was extracted from the geological database and lineaments were detected from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite images. The land cover was classified based on the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite image. Landslide hazard areas were analysed and mapped, using the landslide-occurrence factors, by the probability-likelihood ratio method. The results of the analysis were verified using actual landslide location data. The validation results showed satisfactory agreement between the hazard map and the existing data on landslide locations.
