[Termes IGN] rebond post-glaciaireRésumé : (auteur) Geodetic measurements of the vertical crustal displacement collocated with absolute gravity changes provide a discriminatory measurement of present-day glacial changes, versus more deeply seated rock motions caused by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). At the East Antarctic station of Dumont d'Urville, we compare the displacements derived from continuous DORIS (1993.0–2006.0) and Global Positioning System (GPS) (1999.0–2005.7) data, and observed changes in absolute gravity (2000–2006), with the predicted vertical displacement and change in gravity from GIA modelling. The geodetic results have mutual self-consistency, suggest station stability and provide upper bounds on both GIA and secular ice mass changes. The GIA models tend to predict amplitudes of rock motion larger than those observed, and we conclude that this part of Antarctica is probably experiencing a slight gain in ice mass, in contrast to West Antarctica. The models' estimates were evaluated against 40 days of radiometric data collected in 14 stations. Analyzed sky conditions ranged from completely overcast conditions to clear skies. Additionally, the role of the spatial resolution of the DEM has been evaluated through the use of two different resolutions: 20 and 100 m. Results showed that, under clear-sky conditions, the daily solar radiation variability in the study area may be reasonably estimated with mean bias errors under 10% and root mean square error values of around 15%. On the other hand, results proved that the reliability of the estimates substantially decreases under overcast conditions for some of the solar radiation models. Regarding the role of the DEM spatial resolution, results suggested that the reliability of the estimates for complex topography areas under clear-sky conditions improves using a higher spatial resolution. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) We analysed DORIS data from Socorro Island (Mexico), providing weekly coordinates in ITRF2000 from 1900 to 2006. Careful analysis of this time-series shows horizontal and vertical movements related to recent activity of the Mt. Evermannn volcano. A deflation of the volcano between 1993 and 1996 (−94 mm yr−1 in the N23°W direction, directly pointing in the direction of the crater summit) is observed. We identify also a clear horizontal discontinuity of 81 mm and a significant change in velocity on 2002 October 3. We use a Mogi formalism to provide constraints from our geodetic results on the successive locations and size of the depletion and inflation sources. Our model is consistent with a deflation source for the period 1993–1996 located beneath Mt. Evermannn at a depth of about 6.2 km below sea level. However, our data constrain only the azimuth and dip angles of the source, which could be located elsewhere along the azimuth of the summit, depth and volume varying linearly with the distance. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) This review considers potential effects of atmospheric change and climate warming within the timberline ecotone of the Central European Alps. After focusing on the impacts of ozone (O3) and rising atmospheric CO2 concentration, effects of climate warming on the carbon and water balance of timberline trees and forests will be outlined towards conclusions about changes in tree growth and treeline dynamics.
Presently, ambient ground-level O3 concentrations do not exert crucial stress on adult conifers at the timberline of the Central European Alps. In response to elevated atmospheric CO2 Larix decidua showed growth increase, whereas no such response was found in Pinus uncinata . Overall climate warming appears as the factor responsible for the observed growth stimulation of timberline trees. Increased seedling re-establishment in the Central European Alps however, resulted from invasion into potential habitats rather than upward migration due to climate change, although seedlings will only reach tree size upon successful coupling with the atmosphere and thus loosing the beneficial microclimate of low stature vegetation. In conclusion, future climate extremes are more likely than the gradual temperature increase to control treeline dynamics in the Central European Alps.
