[Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Avalanches are behind the majority of fatalities and heavy damage to property in snow-covered mountainous terrain like Himalaya. Recognizing avalanche susceptible areas and publication of avalanche susceptibility maps assist decision-makers and planners to execute suitable measures to reduce the avalanche risk. The present study is an attempt to prepare an avalanche susceptibility map of the Nubra valley region using multi-criteria decision analysis–analytical hierarchy process model in GIS environment. The most prominent avalanche occurrence factors used in this model are slope, aspect, curvature, elevation, terrain roughness and ground cover. ASTER GDEM V2 and Landsat 8 satellite imagery were used to generate considered factors. For validation of the results, prediction rate/accuracy is calculated using the avalanche inventory map of documented avalanche locations. To calculate the prediction accuracy, area under the ROC curve (ROC-AUC) method has been used. The prediction accuracy of the validation results using ROC-AUC shows 91%. [Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) Since it was first described about two centuries ago and due to its adverse impacts on urban ecological environment and the overall livability of cities, the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon has been, and still is, an important research topic across various fields of study. However, UHI studies on cities in mountain regions are still lacking. This study aims to contribute to this endeavor by monitoring and examining the formation of surface UHI (SUHI) in a tropical mountain city of Southeast Asia –Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines– using Landsat data (1987–2015). Based on mean surface temperature difference between impervious surface (IS) and green space (GS1), SUHI intensity (SUHII) in the study area increased from 2.7 °C in 1987 to 3.4 °C in 2015. Between an urban zone (>86% impervious) and a rural zone ( Numéro de notice : A2017-720 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2017.09.008 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2017.09.008 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=88405

[Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) The degree to which short-term non-tectonic processes, either natural and anthropogenic, influence the occurrence of earthquakes in active tectonic settings or ‘stable’ plate interiors, remains a subject of debate. Recent work in plate-boundary regions demonstrates the capacity for long-wavelength changes in continental water storage to produce observable surface deformation, induce crustal stresses and modulate seismicity rates. Here we show that a significant variation in the rate of microearthquakes in the intraplate New Madrid Seismic Zone at annual and multi-annual timescales coincides with hydrological loading in the upper Mississippi embayment. We demonstrate that this loading, which results in geodetically observed surface deformation, induces stresses within the lithosphere that, although of small amplitude, modulate the ongoing seismicity of the New Madrid region. Correspondence between surface deformation, hydrological loading and seismicity rates at both annual and multi-annual timescales indicates that seismicity variations are the direct result of elastic stresses induced by the water load. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) The length of the fire cycle is a critical factor affecting the vegetation cover in boreal and temperate regions. However, its responses to climate change remain poorly understood. We reanalyzed data from earlier studies of forest age structures at the landscape level, in order to map the evolution of regional fire cycles across Eastern North American boreal and temperate forests, following the termination of the Little Ice Age (LIA). We demonstrated a well‐defined spatial pattern of post‐LIA changes in the length of fire cycles toward lower fire activity during the 1800s and 1900s. The western section of Eastern North America (west of 77°W) experienced a decline in fire activity as early as the first half of the 1800s. By contrast, the eastern section showed these declines as late as the early 1900s. During a regionally fire‐prone period of the 1910s–1920s, forests in the western section of Eastern boreal North America burned more than forests in the eastern section. The climate appeared to dominate over vegetation composition and human impacts in shaping the geographical pattern of the post‐LIA change in fire activity. Changes in the atmospheric circulation patterns following the termination of the LIA, specifically changes in Arctic Oscillation and the strengthening of the Continental Polar Trough, were likely drivers of the regional fire dynamics.
