[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The expansion of French forests both in surface area and growing stock is explored based on National Forest Inventory data and Daubrée’s statistics (1908). The author studied their geographic variability under various ownership schemes (private, state or other regulated public forests) and depending on their composition (hardwood/softwood). Between 1908 and 2010, the increase in surface area was 5.1 million hectares (+ 50 %) with the fastest expansion rate in the Massif Central, and hardwoods gaining ground twice as fast as softwoods, although their overall proportions remained unchanged. Between 1975 and 2010, growing stock (+ 59 %, + 930 million cubic metres) developed three times more quickly than surface area but varied considerably between geographic locations: with area taking the lead in southern France and Brittany while in the Massif Central growing stock was preeminent, pointing to a certain continuity in relation to previous expansion of forest area. Over the same period, private forests and other regulated public forests experienced similar relative surface area variations (+ 20 %), but private forests accumulated twice as much growing stock (+ 80 %) as public forests. Between 1987 and 1994, private deciduous forests increased the most (+ 280 000 ha and + 105 million cubic metres), followed by private coniferous forests (+ 60 000 ha and + 63 million cubic metres). In the recent decade (2006-2015), increases in areas and stocks have continued at a pace of respectively 120 000 ha/year and 44 million cubic metres suggesting that this trend will continue over coming decades. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Most experimental evidence on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning comes from ecosystems with fast‐growing plants, such as grasslands. Although forests provide essential ecological services, they have been less well investigated. We used dendrochronology to compare the tree radial growth rates of four important timber species in replicated, spatially mapped stands that differed in tree composition and diversity within a central European managed forest. Growth rates differed among species but were largely unaffected by the density of neighbouring trees. Increasing stand diversity enhanced individual growth rates, after accounting for the effects of tree density and size. These increases were statistically indistinguishable among the four species. In contrast, the effects of stand and neighbourhood species composition on growth rates were non‐significant. Policy implications. Our study of long‐established central European forest stands revealed levels of tree diversity can be increased in managed forests, with the potential for modest increases in tree growth rates. These results suggest that in addition to the biodiversity and risk mitigation benefits associated with shifting practices away from monoculture management, increased carbon sequestration and yields in mature forests are likely to be realized. Our results suggest that it is possible to increase forest diversity with little or no costs to production and even with the potential for modest increases in tree growth rates. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) We present new measurements of mass evolution for the Mediterranean, Black, Red, and Caspian Seas as determined by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) GRACE time-variable global gravity mascon solutions. These new solutions are compared to sea surface altimetry measurements of sea level anomalies with steric corrections applied. To assess their accuracy, the GRACE- and altimetry-derived solutions are applied to the set of forward models used by GSFC for processing the GRACE Level-1B datasets, with the resulting inter-satellite range-acceleration residuals providing a useful metric for analyzing solution quality. We also present a differential correction strategy to calibrate the time series of mass change for each of the seas by establishing the strong linear relationship between differences in the forward modeled mass and the corresponding range-acceleration residuals between the two solutions. These calibrated time series of mass change are directly determined from the range-acceleration residuals, effectively providing regionally-tuned GRACE solutions without the need to form and invert normal equations. Finally, the calibrated GRACE time series are discussed and combined with the steric-corrected sea level anomalies to provide new measurements of the unmodeled steric variability for each of the seas over the span of the GRACE observation record. We apply ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) to adaptively sort the mass and steric components of sea level anomalies into seasonal, non-seasonal, and long-term temporal scales.
