This has the potential of improving the numerical weather prediction (NWP) analysis/forecast and the water budget studies over that region. However, it is well known that the humidity from radiosondes can have some errors depending on sonde type, relative humidity (RH), temperature and the age of the sensor and can give rise to dry biases that are typically between 5% and 30% for RH. Three main sonde types were used in the AMMA field experiment: Vaisala RS80A, Vaisala RS92 and MODEM. In this article, a new empirical method is presented by using the operational European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) short‐range forecast as an intermediary dataset for computing biases. The validation of the correction method using global positioning system (GPS) total columnar water vapour (TCWV) confirms that the method is able to correct for a large part of the dry biases associated with the different sonde types. Results from analysis experiments show how the correction of humidity is particularly important in the West African region due to its impact on the development of convection in NWP models. The proposed radiosonde humidity bias correction has been applied to the special AMMA reanalysis experiment performed at ECMWF for the 2006 West African wet monsoon season. This is expected to benefit a wide number of AMMA‐related studies that make use of the reanalysis, in particular those focusing on the water cycle. [Termes IGN] seuillageRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents an adaptive solution to topographic feature extraction from digital terrain model. First, a slope map is produced by the proposed slope estimator that combines the well-known D8 and finite difference methods. In the second step, the Laplacian of Gaussian (LOG) operator with multiple thresholds is applied to the resultant slope map to determine edge pixels that have local maximum curvature and maximum connectivity. The third step adopts the original and robust marching square algorithms to trace the topographic features. Modification is made to selectively introduce shoulder points according to the local topographic complexity. In comparison to the existing algorithms, the performance of the proposed adaptive marching square algorithm is evaluated in terms of precision and resolution of the extracted features. Digital terrain models over three locations in Antarctica are used for this study. It is shown overall reducing 75 percent of the shoulder points from the robust algorithm will cause 24 percent precision drop in the adaptive method. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Boundary line release criteria are increasingly applied to evaluate forest disturbance histories from tree-ring data. However, a number of important properties central to the technique have not been evaluated, including: (i) the ability of boundary line release criteria to standardize releases across various sites, species, and tree life stages (ii) the minimum sample sizes necessary for developing boundary lines, and (iii) the degree to which the criteria can resolve the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance event. In an analysis of eleven North American tree species, boundary line release criteria do not fully compensate for declines in release response a tree experiences with increasing age and size, with the exception Tsuga canadensis. A bootstrapping analysis indicates that approximately 50 000 ring width measurements are necessary to develop boundary line release criteria for a given species. In a Quercus prinus stand, boundary line release criteria better predict the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance than an earlier running mean technique. Despite certain limitations, boundary line release criteria have the potential to standardize release calculation across most life stages of a tree, and possibly among sites and species. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Decades of cruise-based exploration have provided excellent snapshots of the structure of mid-ocean ridges and have revealed that accretion is a mixture of steady-state and quantum events. Observatory-type studies are now needed to quantify the temporal evolution of these systems. A multi-disciplinary seafloor observatory site is currently being set up at the Lucky Strike volcano, in the axial valley of the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge as a part of the MoMAR (monitoring of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) initiative. The aim of this observatory is to better understand the dynamics of the volcano and the hydrothermal vents hosted at its summit as well as their plumbing systems. In August 2006, the GRAVILUCK cruise initiated an experiment to monitor the deformation of Lucky Strike volcano. A geodetic network was installed, and seafloor pressure, gravity and magnetic data were collected. In this paper, we present the method used to monitor volcanic deformation, which involves measuring relative depth difference between points within a seafloor geodesy network. We show that, taking into account oceanographic variability and measurement noise, the network should be able to detect vertical deformations of the order of 1 cm.
