[Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports on progress in generalization and selective feature removal for a subset of fundamental base map layers that enables competent mapping through scales ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:1,000,000. Thinning and partitioning methods are applied to road features and labels for The National Map of the United States. Roads are thinned adaptively using the ArcGIS Thin Road Network geoprocessing tool, which removes features by feature hierarchy and network connectivity, yet preserves characteristic urban/rural local density patterns that can be lost through simple category removals. The paper describes thinning for label hierarchies within road categories, improved preference in placement for more important road labels, and selective removal of labels through scale. Use of the Radical Law to guide matches between thinning parameters and suitable scales of representation also is shown. Inspection of graphic results of these treatments can help to establish parameters for automated base map design for US topographic mapping. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) With a focus on mobile and web mapping, we propose several algorithms for on-the-fly generalization of point data, such as points of interest (POIs) or large point collections. In order to achieve real-time performance, we use a quadtree data structure. With their hierarchical subdivision structure and progressive levels of detail, indices of the quadtree family lend themselves as auxiliary data structures to support algorithms for generalization operations, including selection, simplification, aggregation, and displacement of point data. The spatial index can further be used to generate several local and global measures that can then serve to make educated guesses on the density and proximity of points across map scales, and thus enable control of the operation of the generalization algorithms. An implementation of the proposed algorithms has shown that, and thanks to the quadtree index, real-time performance can be achieved even for large point sets. Furthermore, the quadtree data structure can be extended into a caching structure, which can be used to store pre-computed generalizations; thus, a desired level of detail (LOD) can simply be retrieved from cache. [Termes IGN] radar à visée latéraleRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of determining a suitable map projection for side-looking synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery is examined. Using a foundation in dynamic mathematics, a new Space Oblique Conic (SOC) projection is proposed that is specifically designed for a side-looking radar imagery. The geometric model of SOC is formalized, and the projection of the central line of a side-looking field of view is established based on this model. The forward and inverse formulas for the SOC projection are derived and the projection's pattern of distortion is discussed. As an example, SEASAT-A radar imagery is considered, and a particular SOC projection model for this satellite derived. [Termes IGN] projectionRésumé : (Auteur) The idea of designing a new map projection via combination of two projections is well established. Some of the most popular world map projections in use today were devised in this manner. One construction method is to combine two source projections along a common parallel; a second method calculates the arithmetic means of two projections. These two methods for creating new world map projections are included in the latest version of Flex Projector. Flex Projector, afreeware mapping application, offers a graphical approach for customizing existing projections and creating new projections. The Mixer is a new feature in the latest version that allows the user to blend two existing projections to create a new hybrid projection. In addition to the two established combination methods, the software includes a new method for blending projections specific to its visual design approach. With this new method, a unique trait of one projection is transferable to a second projection. Flex Projector allows for the blending of four different projection traits separately or in combination: (1) the horizontal length of parallels, (2) the vertical distance of parallels from the equator, (3) the distribution of meridians, and (4) the bending of parallels. This article briefly describes the main characteristics of Flex Projector and then documents the new approaches to projection blending. The integration of the three methods into Flex Projector makes creating new projections simple and easy to control and allows the user to evaluate distortion characteristics of new projections. As an applied example, the article also introduces the new Pacific projection that is a blend of the Ginzburg VIII and Mollweide projections. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Panoramic hiking and skiing maps are popular among tourists and map collectors. Such three-dimensional (3D) maps allow for easy orientation and provide the observer with an immersive impression of the landscape to be discovered or remembered. The most impressive panoramic masterpieces are almost exclusively painted manually or with minor digital tool support. Software packages that allow modern cartographers to create 3D maps of comparable visual quality (semi-) automatically are currently not available. Computer graphics has developed a number of methods for painterly rendering, including imitating the characteristics of a panorama artist's brush stroke and raster-based methods that synthesize new texture from examples. In this article, the latter approach is explored, and the idea of creating terrain textures for arbitrary regions by reassembling them from pieces of scanned hand-painted masterworks is pursued. Panorama painters vary the appearance of land cover depending on terrain characteristics and viewing parameters. This article suggests how the example-based texture synthesis approach could be adapted to accommodate such dependencies. A case study of transferring the appearance of H.C. Berann's hand-painted panorama of the Swiss Jungfrau region to a digital panorama of a different region is presented. The case study shows that a number of previously unanticipated hurdles are encountered when using hand-painted panoramas as input to an example-based texture synthesis algorithm. By identifying the challenges of applying texture-by-example to panoramic map making and by suggesting possible solutions, the authors aim to promote the creation of more visually appealing and legible digital panoramic maps. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a new research framework for analyzing the spatial distribution of web pages and social media (Twitter) messages with related contents, called Visualizing Information Space in Ontological Networks (VISION). This innovative method can facilitate the tracking of ideas and social events disseminated in cyberspace from a spatial-temporal perspective. Thousands of web pages and millions of tweets associated with the same keywords were converted into visualization maps using commercial web search engines (Yahoo application programming interface (API) and Bing API), a social media search engine (Twitter APIs), Internet Protocol (IP) geolocation methods, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) functions (e.g., kernel density and raster-based map algebra methods). We found that comparing multiple web information landscapes with different keywords or different dates can reveal important spatial patterns and “geospatial fingerprints” for selected keywords. We used the 2012 US Presidential Election candidates as our case study to validate this method. We noticed that the weekly changes of the geographic probability of hosting “Barack Obama” or “Mitt Romney” web pages are highly related to certain major campaign events. Both attention levels and the content of the tweets were deeply impacted by Hurricane Sandy. This new approach may provide a new research direction for studying human thought, human behaviors, and social activities quantitatively.
