[Termes IGN] morphologie urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this article is to present a method to calculate the morphological properties of the built environment using LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data, geographic information systems (GIS) data and three-dimensional (3D) models of cities as a source of information. A hybrid approach that takes into account different types of inputs and consequently evaluates the accuracy of each type of used data is presented. This work is intended to give a first response to the lack of a comprehensive and accurate procedure that uses LiDAR data in order to automatically derive precise morphological properties, such as volumes and surfaces (façades and roofs) of buildings. The method was tested on two case-study areas in the Geneva region with different characteristics, one in the old town along the Rhone River and the other on the CERN campus. A statistical analysis that compares the results of the computation with the 3D model of the built environment was used to validate the results, complemented by significance statistical tests. Outcomes showed that the proposed method to derive morphological properties can reach high levels of accuracy, thus enhancing the potential uses of LiDAR data for numerous applications, typically for the assessment of the urban environmental quality (UEQ) at the city and district scale, such as the estimation of the potential deployment of renewable energies in the built environment and the determination and monitoring of several urban indicators. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Classification algorithms based on single-pixel analysis often do not give the desired result when applied to high-spatial-resolution remote-sensing data. In such cases, classification algorithms based on object-oriented image segmentation are needed. There are many segmentation algorithms in the literature, but few have been applied in urban studies to classify a high-spatial-resolution remote-sensing image. Furthermore, the user must specify the spectral and spatial parameters that are data dependent. In this paper, we propose an automatic multispectral segmentation algorithm inspired by the specific idea of guiding a classification process for a high-spatial-resolution remote-sensing image of an urban area using an existing digital map of the same area. The classification results could be used, for example, for high-scale database updating or change-detection studies. The algorithm developed uses digital maps and spectral data as inputs. It generates the segmentation parameters automatically. The algorithm is able to provide a segmented image with accuracy greater than 90%. The segmentation results are then used in a rule-based classification using spectral, geometric, textural, and contextual information. The classification accuracy of the proposed rule-based classification is at least 17% greater than the maximum-likelihood classification results. Results and future improvements will be discussed. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an automatic approach to road marking reconstruction using stereo pairs acquired by a mobile mapping system in a dense urban area. Two types of road markings were studied: zebra crossings (crosswalks) and dashed lines. These two types of road markings consist of strips having known shape and size. These geometric specifications are used to constrain the recognition of strips. In both cases (i.e. zebra crossings and dashed lines), the reconstruction method consists of three main steps. The first step extracts edge points from the left and right images of a stereo pair and computes 3D linked edges using a matching process. The second step comprises a filtering process that uses the known geometric specifications of road marking objects. The goal is to preserve linked edges that can plausibly belong to road markings and to filter others out. The final step uses the remaining linked edges to fit a theoretical model to the data. The method developed has been used for processing a large number of images. Road markings are successfully and precisely reconstructed in dense urban areas under real traffic conditions. Recently, effective high level approaches have been developed, i.e., the ones involving the minimization of an energetic formulation. Yet, their efficiency has to be balanced by the amount of processing power required to obtain good results. In this paper, we introduce an original energetic model for building footprint extraction from high resolution digital elevation models (?1 m) in urban areas. Our goal is to formulate the energy in an efficient way, easy to parametrize and fast to compute, in order to get an effective process still providing good results. Our work is based on stochastic geometry, and in particular on marked point processes of rectangles. We therefore try to obtain a reliable object configuration described by a collection of rectangular building footprints. To do so, an energy function made up of two terms is defined: the first term measures the adequacy of the objects with respect to the data and the second one has the ability to favour or penalize some footprint configurations based on prior knowledge (alignment, overlapping,...). To minimize the global energy, we use a Reversible Jump Monte Carlo Markov Chain (RJMCMC) sampler coupled with a simulated annealing algorithm, leading to an optimal configuration of objects. Various results from different areas and resolutions are presented and evaluated. Our work is also compared with an already existing methodology based on the same mathematical framework that uses a much more complex energy function. We show how we obtain similarly good results with a high computational efficiency (between 50 and 100 times faster) using a simplified energy that requires a single data-independent parameter, compared to more than 20 inter-related and hard-to-tune parameters.
