[Termes IGN] San DiegoRésumé : (Auteur) With the development of new remote sensing systems, very high spatial and spectral resolution images now provide a source for detailed and continuous sampling of the Earth's surface from local to regional scales. This paper presents three strategies for selecting and integrating information from different spatial resolutions into classification routines. One strategy is to combine layers of image varying resolution. A second strategy involves comparing the a posteriori probabilities of each class at different resolutions. Another strategy is based on a top-down approach stating with the coarsest resolution. The multiresolution strategies are tested using simulated multiresolution images for a portion of the rural-urban fringe of the SanDiego Metropolitan Area. The classification accuracy obtained from using three multiple strategies was greater when compared with that from a conventional single-resolution approach. Among the three strategies, the top-down approach resulted in the highest classification accuracy with a Kappa value of 0,648 compared to a Kappa of 0,566 for the conventional classifier. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present an object-based approach for urban land cover classification from high-resolution multispectral image data that builds upon a pixel-based fuzzy classification approach. This combined pixel / object approach is demonstrated using pan-sharpened multispectral IKONOS imagery from dense urban areas. The fuzzy pixel-based classifier utilises both spectral and spatial information to discriminate between spectrally similar Road and Building urban land cover classes. After the pixel-based classification, a technique that utilises both spectral and spatial heterogeneity is used to segment the image to facilitate further object-based classification. An object-based fuzzy logic classifier is then implemented to improve upon the pixel-based classification by identifying one additional class in dense urban areas: non-road, non-building impervious surface. With the fuzzy pixel-based classification as input, the object-based classifier then uses shape, spectral. and neighbourhood features to determine the final classification of the segmented image. Using these techniques, the object-based classifier is able to identify Buildings, Impervious Surface, and Roads in dense urban areas with 76%, 81%, and 99% classification accuracies, respectively. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we derive two techniques for the classification of Multifrequency/multitemporal polarimetric SAR images, based respectively on a statistical and on a neural approach. Both techniques are especially designed to exploit the spatial structure of the observed scene, thus allowing more stable classification results. Such techniques are useful when looking at medium - to - scale features, like the boundaries between urban and non-urban areas. They are applied to a set of SIR-C images of a urban area, to test their effectiveness in the identification of the different classes that compose the observed scene. A lower and an upper bound to the classification performance are introduced to characterise their limits. They correspond respectively to pixel-by-pixel classification and to the joint classification of the pixels belonging to the different classes identified in the ground truth. The results achieved with the two approaches are quantitatively analysed by comparing them to the ground truth. Moreover, a hybrid approach is presented, where the homogeneous regions identified through statistical segmentation are classified using a neuro-fuzzy technique. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the results achieved with all the proposed techniques is carried out, showing that their classification performance is much higher than the lower bound and reasonably close to the upper bound. This is a consequence of their effectiveness in the exploitation of the spatial information. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Assessing urban vulnerability to natural hazards such as earthquakes can be regarded as an ill-structured problem (i.e. a problem for which there is no unique, identifiable, objectively optimal solution). A review of the literature indicates a number of contrasting definitions of what vulnerability means, as well as numerous conflicting perspectives on what should or should not be included within the broad assessment of vulnerability in cities. This paper reports on the findings from a project in which a GIS methodology has been developed to assess urban vulnerability through a spatial analytical procedure. First, we highlight the deficiencies of current GIS approaches to urban vulnerability analysis and discuss the ill-structured nature of the vulnerability problem. We then propose a working definition for vulnerability assessment in which vulnerability is thought of as a spatial decision problem under the conditions of uncertainty. Next, we present a methodology to incorporate this definition into a GIS framework that combines elements from the techniques of spatial multicriteria analysis and fuzzy logic. The application of this methodology is then illustrated with a case study from Los Angeles County. The results suggest that the proposed methodology may provide a new approach for analyzing vulnerability that can add to our understanding of human/hazards interaction.
