[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Study of the detailed structure and ecological functioning of urban and peri-urban systems is intensifying due to increasing concentration of the human population into urban centers. Much of this increase is expected to occur in semiarid to arid cites. Data from new high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution satellite-based sensors promise to increase our understanding of global urban ecological and climatic processes and improve city and land planning capabilities. Two of these sensors, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), provide an opportunity to compare urban spatial structure (distribution and configuration of discrete land cover/land use classes on the landscape) with contemporaneous measurements of surface biophysical composition at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Such combined measurements are useful for modeling changes to urban climate, hydrology, and biogeochemical cycles caused by modification of the landscape. We compare gridded landscape metrics derived from expert systern land cover classification of ASTER to corresponding MODIS NDVI data at scales of 250 m/pixel, 500 m/pixel, and 1 km/pixel in order to determine which of these scales is optimal for monitoring of urban biophysical processes and landscape structure change. Weak positive and negative correlations between NDVI and landscape structure were observed at all three spatial scales for the metrics Class Area, Mean Patch Size, Edge Density, and Interspersion/Juxtaposition Index. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Insufficient research has been done on integrating artificial-neural-network-based cellular automata (CA) models and constrained CA models, even though both types have been studied for several years. In this paper, a constrained CA model based on an artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to simulate and forecast urban growth. Neural networks can learn from available urban land-use geospatial data and drus deal with redundancy, inaccuracy, and noise during the CA parameter calibration. In the ANN-Urban-CA model we used, a two-layer Back-Propagation (BP) neural network bas been integrated into a CA model to seek suitable parameter values that match the historical data. Each cell's probability of urban transformation is determined by the neural network during simulation. A macro-scale socio-economic model was run together with the CA model to estimate demand to urban space in each period in the future. The total number of new urban cells generated by the CA model was constrained, taking such exogenous demands as population forecasts into account. Beijing urban growth between 1980 and 2000 was simulated using this model, and long-term (2001-2015) growth was forecast based on multiple socio-economic scenarios. The ANN-Urban-CA model was found capable of simulating and forecasting the complex and non-linear spatial-temporal process of urban growth in a reasonably short time, with less subjective uncertainty. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a methodology to automatically detect and remove the shadows in high-resolution urban aerial images for urban GIS applications. The image is generated by ADS40, which is a multiple line scanner. The system includes shadow simulation, ray tracing, integrated shadow detection. and shadow removal. The geodetic shadow is simulated from a digital surface model (DSM) and the sun attitude. Using an ADS40 camera model and collinearity equations, the corresponding scan line of the shadow is obtained. Ray tracing is used to determine the visibility of the shadow in the image. A building boundary driven height field ray tracing method is proposed to boost the tracing efficiency. Shadow segmentation is taken from the RGB image at the base of the traced image shadows. The segmentation threshold is derived from the histogram of the traced image shadow area. Shadow removal includes the shadow region and companion region labelling, the histogram processing, and intensity mapping. Some experiment results are presented to show the effectiveness of the methods. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This letter presents an experiment carried out in Toulouse in May 2004 to study the spectral variability and bidirectional reflectance behaviour of urban materials. The measurements were carried out at a 20 cm spatial resolution in the visible and near‐infrared (350–2500 nm). These measurements allow quantification of three main types of reflectance spatial variability. In addition to these in situ experiments, the bidirectional properties of urban material samples were studied in the laboratory with a goniometer.
