[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel generalization model for selecting characteristic streets in an urban street network. This model retains the central structure of a street network. It relies on a structural representation of a street network using graph principles where vertices represent named streets and links represent street intersections. Based on this representation, so-called connectivity graph, centrality measures are introduced to qualify the status of each individual vertex within the graph. We show that these measures can be used for characterizing the structural properties of an urban street network, and for the selection of important streets. The proposed approach is validated by a case study applied to a middle-sized Swedish city. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Inter-urban income disparities reflect differences between individual urban localities in the average incomes of their residents. The present paper discusses different ways of visualizing such disparities on thematic maps. The approach we propose is based on the transformation of distances between individual localities and a reference city (e.g. a major population centre of a country) in proportion to the actual differences in the income levels. The general principle of such a transformation is to bring closer to the reference city places with higher incomes, while moving away localities with low income levels. Three alternative approaches to the implementation of this transformation technique are discussed. According to the 'actual distance' method, the spatial 'shift' of a locality on the map is set proportional to both the relative difference in incomes and the aerial distance between a locality and the reference city. In the 'proportional increment' transformation, the distance between a locality and the reference city is adjusted by a parameter whose values are proportional to income disparities between the two. Lastly, according to the 'concentric circle' transformation, localities with identical levels of incomes are positioned at a certain distance from the reference city, forming concentric circles around it. Both advantages and disadvantages of these transformation techniques are discussed, and the 'proportional increment' method is chosen as the best-performing visualization technique. The performance of this technique is demonstrated using income data for urban localities in Israel in 1991 and 1999. As analysis indicates, the proposed method helps to illustrate both the existing patterns of inter-urban income disparities and their dynamics over time. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The demands for ground digital elevation models (DEMs) have been increasing rapidly. Many modern mapping technologies, such as lidar scanning, interferometric SAR (IfSAR), and stereo image matching, are capable of generating digital surface models (DSMs) directly. Research on deriving DEMs from DSMs is a topical area. Airborne IfSAR technology has been in commercial operation since 1996. However, it is still technically challenging to automate the process of generating DEMs from IfSAR DSMs. The lack of scientific studies in this area is mainly caused by the sensitivity and availability of commercial IfSAR data. In this study, researchers have been working with the commercial IfSAR system developer to perform an initial study on automatic reconstruction of ground DEMsfrom IfSAR DSMs. This paper presents a compact and yet efficient version of our developed approach. This approach has been tested by using many IfSAR DSMs in different hilly urban areas with light and moderate variations in relief. An accuracy analysis of the reconstructed ground DEMs against the laser DSMs and DEMs has also been performed to test the reliability and efficiency of our approach.
