[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Among approaches for automated generalization of vector data, we focus on the multi-agent paradigm: cartographic objects are modeled as agents (autonomous objects) that apply generalization algorithms to themselves to satisfy cartographic constraints. Several agent levels are considered, for example, individual agents, such as a building, and agents representing a group of agents, such as an urban block composed of the surrounding roads and contained buildings. Several multi-agent models were proposed to automate the orchestration of map generalization processes. Existing multi-agent generalization models have different approaches to manage the relations between agent levels. In this paper, we unify existing models, adapting a multi-level simulation model, to simplify interactions between agents in different levels. We propose the DIOGEN model, in which the principle of interactions between agents of different levels is adapted to constraint-driven cartographic generalization. DIOGEN unifies three existing multi-agent generalization models (AGENT, CartACom and GAEL), combine their behaviors and take advantage of their skills. Our proposal is evaluated on different use cases: instances of topographic mapping, and mapping of hiking routes over topographic data as an example of thematic mapping. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article proposes an improvement of automated cartographic generalization using multi-agent sytems in urban areas. Indeed the AGENT model, whose robustness has been tested and approved through the European project AGENT, gives very good results in generalizing dense urban areas by means of enlargement, removal and displacement of buildings. But this model does not tackle the question of including particular structures like building alignments in the process, which is a crucial issue. The problem is that integrating such structures does not fit into the accurate top-down hierarchy of urban agents. In order to face this problem, we propose to partly re-engineer the model by introducing the concept of reactional agents whose behavior is very different from hierarchical agents of the original model as they use bottom-up activation. In this view, urban alignment is considered to be a reactional agent activated only by its inner buildings, which generalizes the aligned buildings together into one entire structure. Associating reactional alignment behavior with new generalization actions on alignments significantly improves the model and gives better results in dense urban areas. Moreover, the idea could probably be used for other applications. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper explores the application of an agent based methodology to the problem of automated road generalisation. It focuses on the generalisation of one single road feature in the case of winding mountain roads, and its implications on the surrounding road network. The aim is to ensure legibility of the road symbol under scale changes, i.e. mainly to avoid coalescence. The solution proposed here is based on the multi-agent framework developed as part of the European AGENT project. It uses a previous approach in automated road generalisation that consists of decomposing the road into parts in order to isolate the coalesced portions, and then handle those portions individually with tailored algorithms. The paper presents the decomposition process in terms of agent modelling. A worked example of the process is presented. A discussion of the results includes comparison with other possible approaches to automated road generalisation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : cartographic generalisation constraints modelling spatial environment multi-agent communicative agents topographic data Résumé : (auteur) Our research is concerned with automated generalisation of topographic vector databases in order to produce maps. This article presents a new, agent-based generalization model called CARTACOM (Cartographic generalisation with Communicating Agents), dedicated to the treatment of areas of low density but where rubber sheeting techniques are not sufficient because some eliminations or aggregations are needed. In CARTACOM, the objects of the initial database are modelled as agents, that is, autonomous entities, that choose and apply generalisation algorithms to themselves in order to increase the satisfaction of their constraints as much as possible. The CARTACOM model focuses on modelling and treating the relational constraints, defined as constraints that concern a relation between two objects. In order to detect and assess their relational constraints, the CARTACOM agents are able to perceive their spatial surroundings. Moreover, to make the good generalisation decisions to satisfy their relational constraints, they are able to communicate with their neighbours using predefined dialogue protocols. Finally, a hook to another agent-based generalisation model – AGENT – is provided, so that the CARTACOM agents can handle not only their relational constraints but also their internal constraints. The CARTACOM model has been applied to the generalisation of low-density, heterogeneous areas like rural areas, where the space is not hierarchically organised. Examples of results obtained on real data show that it is well adapted for this application. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : automated generalisation rule revision trial and error strategy Résumé : (auteur) Automating the generalisation process, a major issue for national mapping agencies, is extremely complex. Several works have proposed to deal with this complexity using a trial and error strategy. The performance of systems based on such a strategy is directly dependent on the quality of the control knowledge (i.e. heuristics) used to guide the trials. Unfortunately, most of the time, the definition and updation of knowledge is a fastidious task. In this context, automatic knowledge revision can not only improve the performance of the generalisation, but also allow it to automatically adapt to various usages and evolve when new elements are introduced. In this article, an offline knowledge revision approach is proposed, based on a logging of the system and on the analysis of outcoming logs. This approach is dedicated to the revision of control knowledge expressed by production rules. We have implemented and tested this approach for the automated generalisation of groups of buildings within a generalisation model called AGENT, from initial data that reference a scale of approximately 1:15,000 compared with the target map's scale of 1:50,000. The results show that our approach improves the quality of the control knowledge and thus the performance of the system. Moreover, the approach proposed is generic and can be applied to other systems based on a trial and error strategy, dedicated to generalisation or not.
