[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The paradigm of land degradation/land ressource/land administration relationships is examined from a synthesis of the classical field survey, airborne and spaceborne low resolution techniques concerning an example of case study in the zone of Sahel. How can the new generation of data inputs, especially from the high resolution sensors, bring more pertinent information outputs that may involve other principles and methods of participatory environmental protection planning for the most vulnerable social groups ? In this respect some possible applications of low-cost micro technology are explored. A theoretical and operational framework for land management information systems is used. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Knowledge, especially the special knowledge about land use itself, is an indispensable component for guiding the whole process of land use data generalization. In this study, such knowledge is classified into two broad types, i.e. general knowledge and thematic knowledge. General knowledge covers the basic and common restrictions and specifications for generalization of geographic data. Thematic knowledge describes the special restrictions and specifications for a specific geographic data application. The paper emphasizes the use of thematic knowledge in detail for land use data generalization. Three main types of thematic knowledge are identified, i.e. nature-based, culture-based and application-specific. Such thematic knowledge is then represented using the so-called production-rule method to become generalization rules. These rules are built in a prototype system to guide the implementation of land use data generalization. Real-life data have been used for testing and very promising results have been obtained from this system. [Termes IGN] rapport signal sur bruitRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a critical review of the hyperspectral splitting of the solar reflected radiation acquired by hyperspectral imaging sensors. The bandwidth used in the range from 2.0-2.5 um by many hyperspectral sensors sometimes is too narrow for land cover classification. In fact, hyperspectral imagers often suffer from low signal-to-noise (SNR) in the short-wave infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, resulting in noisy image collection. This paper presents a new methodological approach to the splitting of the solar reflected radiation, called the "superspectral approach" It is based on the principle of increasing the channel bandwidth by increasing the number of wavelengths, to build synthetic spectral bands with higher SNR. The methodology has been applied to the Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer (MIVIS) sensor, an airborne hyperspectral scanner used for environmental remote sensing applications in Italy. Interesting results have been achieved in crop classification, processing the Cordenons survey carried out in August 2001 in the northeastern part of Italy. The Spectral Angle Mapper algorithm was used for classification because it is insensitive to shadows. For accuracy assessment, the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (k) were calculated and used in the comparison. Using the superspectral approach, an increment in the overall accuracy of about 42 % and an increment in the kappa coefficient of about 51 % were obtained in comparison to the classification accuracy of unprocessed original MIVIS data (OA = 41.21, k = 0.35). A second case study is presented using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's experimental hyperspectral imager HYPERION. Data acquired over the lake of Garda (Italy) in October 2002 was processed with the superspectral approach. Comparing the simulated HYPERION superspectral bands with the original data, SNR improvements are achieved in the shortwave infrared region (from 0.7-54.2 for 2.012-pm wavelength and from 0.7-64.5 for the 2.365-pm wavelength). The methodology proposed is sensor independent and can be applied to any of the hyperspectral sensors currently available. The main objective of this study was to examine the applicability of land surface and atmospheric products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for assessing the spatial variation in C02 and water vapor fluxes for cloudless agricultural land pixels at the Island of Zealand, Denmark. The spatial distribution of green leaf area index, directbeam ark: diffuse solar radiation and air humidity was inferred on the basis of late morning MODIS data that was combined with afternoon AVHRR data to resolve the diurnal variation in air and surface temperature. These variables were used in a coupled "twoleaf' ecosystem model operating at an hourly time scale. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was strongly correlated with field measurements of green leaf area index (r2=0.91) and remained sensitive to variations in green biomass up to green leaf area indices of 45. Evaluation against standard meteorological data showed that instantaneous estimates of air temperature, actual vapor pressure and incoming solar radiation could be retrieved with overall root mean square errors of 2.5°C, 138.3 Pa and 47.7 Wm2, respectively. The combination of late morning and afternoon inferences made it possible to resolve the diurnal course in key model parameters, and predicted rates of ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange were comparable to eddy covariance measurements at a single flux tower. A large spatial diversity in C02 and water vapor exchange was maintained throughout the study period due to significant regional variations in meteorological input variables and large spatial differences in canopy development. The results of this study stress the necessity of pixel based estimates for an accurate evaluation of regional budgets of C02 and water vapor exchange.
