[Termes IGN] zone intertropicaleRésumé : (Auteur) The remote sensing of pasture quality as determined by nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and magnesium concentration is critical for a better understanding of wildlife and livestock feeding patterns. Although remote sensing techniques have proved useful for assessing the concentration of foliar biochemicals under controlled laboratory conditions, more investigation is required to assess their capabilities in the field where inconsistent results have been obtained so far. We investigated the possibility of determining the concentration of in situ biochemicals in a savanna rangeland, using the spectral reflectance of five grass species. Canopy spectral measurements were taken in the field using a GER 3700 spectroradiometer. We tested the utility of using four variables derived from continuum-removed absorption features for predicting canopy nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and magnesium concentration: (i) continuum-removed derivative reflectance (CRDR), (ii) band depth (BD), (iii) band depth ratio (BDR) and (iv) normalised band depth index (NBDI). Stepwise linear regression was used to select wavelengths from the absorption-feature-based variables. Univariate correlation analysis was also done between the first derivative reflectance and biochemicals. Using a training data set, the variables derived from continuum-removed absorption features could predict biochemicals with R2 values ranging from 0.43 to 0.80. Results were highest using CRDR data, which yielded R2 values of 0.70, 0.80, 0.64, 0.50 and 0.68 with root mean square errors (RMSE) of 0.01, 0.004, 0.03, 0.01 and 0.004 for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and magnesium, respectively. Predicting biochemicals on a test data set, using regression models developed from a training data set. resulted in R2 values ranging from 0. 15 to 0.70. The error of prediction (RSE) in the test data set was 0.08 (+ 10.25% of mean), 0.05 (+ 5.2% of mean), 0.02 (+ 11.11% of mean), 0.05 (+ 11.6% of mean) and 0.03 (+ 15% of mean) for nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous. calcium and magnesium, respectively, using CRDR. When data was partitioned into species groups, the R2 increased significantly to >0.80. With high-quality radiometric and geometric calibration of hyperspectral imagery, the techniques applied in this study (i.e. continuum removal on absorption features) may also be applied on data acquired by airborne and spacebome imaging spectrometers to predict and ultimateIy to map the concentration of macronutrients in tropical rangelands. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The present investigation was an attempt to develop a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) for a test Nagwan watershed situated in the Damodar Barakar catchment in India, the second most seriously eroded area in the world, for not only estimating sediment yields under prevailing resource management systems but also designing a linear programming (LP)based- optimized land-use plan for soil loss reduction in the test watershed. The proposed SDSS was validated on 9 years (1981-1983, 1985-1989, and 1991) of sediment yield data for the test watershed. This showed that the SDSS could mimic the annual dynamics of the total sediment yields at the test watershed outlet with a correlation coefficient of 0.65, model efficiency coefficient of 0.70, mean relative error of 17.97%, and root mean square prediction error of 9.63t ha-1. It could also be used as an efficient tool for assessing sediment yields from different parts of the test watershed and for designing a linear programming (LP)-based optimized land-use plan for reduced total sediment yields from the test watershed. The LP-based land-use plan proposed no change in the total areas under paddy, corn and forest land-use types but suggested their re-distribution within the test watershed's total sediment yield by about 14.61% but also an increase in its paddy and corn crop productivities by 2.80 and 68.14%, respectively. The proposed LP-based land-use plan for the test watershed could thus lead to an enhanced productivity benefit of about Rs 3735ha-1, in monetary terms, from corn crop cultivation at its optimal locations. [Termes IGN] production agricoleRésumé : (Auteur) Precision farming is concerned with site-specific treatment of agricultural land. This approach is necessitated by crop production variability resulting from variability in soil and humidity conditions. Today site-specific treatment is enable by modern geo-information technology - GPS, GIS and remote sensing - and communication technology. Resulting action may include differentiation in ploughing depth and seed density, and the application of fertilisers at higher rates on areas of lower production. The first two of these may be based on information valid over a longer time-span. The latter - variable rate application - requires monitoring of crop conditions during the growing season. How can remotly sensed imagery support monitoring ? The author discusses the potential role of high-resolution satellite sensors - Ikonos, Quickbird and comming Orbview - in precision farming. [Termes IGN] rendement agricoleRésumé : (Auteur) This study demonstrates a unique matrix approach to determine within-field variability in wheat yields using fine spatial resolution 4 m IKONOS data. The matrix approach involves solving a system of simultaneous equations based on IKONOS data and post-harvest yields available at entire field scale. This approach was compared with a regression-based modelling approach involving field-sensor measured yields and the corresponding IKONOS measured indices and wavebands. The IKONOS data explained 74-78% variability in wheat yield. This is a significant result since the finer spatial resolution leads to capturing greater spatial variability and detail in landscape relative to coarser spatial resolution data. A pixel-by-pixel mapping of wheat yield variability highlights the fine spatial detail provided by IKONOS data for precision farming applications. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Information on the quantity and spatial distribution of canopy physiological and biochemical components is of importance for the study of nutrient cycles, productivity, vegetation stress and, more recently, in driving ecosystem models. In this context, remote sensing can play a unique and essential role because of its ability to acquire synoptic information at different time and space scales. This paper presents parts of a two-year field and laboratory study with the new airborne hyperspectral sensor, the Airborne Visible near Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIS), over a test site in the Bavarian Alpine foothills, Germany (48' 8'N, 11°17' E ). The 80-band AVIS was developed at the Department for Earth and Environmental Sciences of the LudwigMaximiliansUniversity Munich and records the 550-1000 mn spectral range. Using this system, 18 hyperspectral datasets were collected between April and September of 1999 and 2000. Weekly measurements of several plant parameters (height, biomass, leaf chlorophyll content, leaf nitrogen content) were carried out during these time periods on three (1999) and six (2000) fields of winter wheat, whereby two different cultivars were investigated in 2000. After system correction and calibration, the hyperspectral data were atmospherically corrected and calibrated to reflectance. The resulting spectra were analysed for their chemical compounds. The statistical analysis was carried out using the Chlorophyll Absorption Integral (CAI) in comparison to established indices: Optimized Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI) and hyperspectral Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (hNDVI). Both the chlorophyll and nitrogen content of the leaves showed good correlations with CAI on a field mean basis. These results as well as two-dimensional information on these parameters are presented to provide information about the spatial heterogeneity within a field.
