[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Increase in forest disturbance due to land use as well as climate change has led to an expansion of young forests worldwide, which drives global carbon dynamics and timber allocation. This study presents a method that combines a single airborne LiDAR acquisition and time since harvest maps to model height growth of post-logged black spruce-dominated forests in a 1700 km2 eastern Canadian boreal landscape. We developed a random forest model in which forest height at a 20 m × 20 m pixel resolution is a function of stand age, combined with environmental variables (e.g., slope, site moisture, surface deposit). Our results highlight the model's strong predictive power: least-square regression between predicted and observed height of our validation dataset was very close to the 1:1 relation and strongly supported by validation metrics (R2 = 0.74; relative RMSE = 19%). Environmental variables thus allowed to accurately predict forest productivity with a high spatial resolution (20 m × 20 m pixels) and predicted forest height growth in the first 50 years after logging ranged between 16 and 27 cm·year−1 across the whole study area, with a mean of 20.5 cm·year−1. The spatial patterns of potential height growth were strongly linked to the effect of topographical variables, with better growth rates on mesic slopes compared to poorly drained soils. Such models could have key implications in forest management, for example to maintain forest ecosystem services by adjusting the harvesting rates depending on forest productivity across the landscapes. One approach to create structurally more diverse forests is retention forestry. Only a small number of studies focused on the effectiveness of retention measures in continuous-cover forestry. Most studies have been conducted in even-aged, clear-cut based management systems and applied different approaches, but they all have in common that the retained trees have been examined for epiphytes only after harvest. Thus, it remains unclear whether these trees or even a certain tree species could take the life-boat function for epiphytes on logged sites. Thus, prior to logging, we assessed epiphytic bryophytes and lichens on potential large living retention trees, here referred to as habitat trees (HT), of Abies alba and compared the diversity pattern to nearby average trees (AT; A. alba, Fagus sylvatica or Picea abies) of smaller sizes in selectively harvested continuous-cover forests. Selection of AT was based on the average stem diameter of all trees within the stand. We found that species richness and Simpson diversity of lichens were significantly higher on HT. For bryophytes, F. sylvatica AT showed significantly higher Simpson diversity. Mixed models revealed positive effects of F. sylvatica on bryophytes, whereas large stem diameters and elevation were the driving forces for lichens. Additionally, ordinations revealed clear patterns in species composition separating between conifers and broadleaved trees, and along increasing altitude and stem diameter. Concerning HT selection, we suggest to focus rather on the tree species diversity than on stem diameter, when aiming to protect epiphytic bryophytes and lichens. We evaluated the LUC potential for reducing emissions and creating annual soil and ecosystem carbon sinks in Finland. We used agricultural statistics, the forest growth model MOTTI, the soil carbon model Yasso07, and the RCP8.5 climate scenario. The soil carbon stock (SOC) of extensified grasslands showed on average less carbon loss than cropland, thus reducing future carbon emissions by LUC between 0.17 Mg ha−1 y-1, initially, and 0.08 Mg ha−1 y-1 after 50 years. The annual rate of such carbon gain was in comparison to SOC between 1.4‰ and 0.7‰ which is lower than proposed by the Paris 4‰ initiative for offsetting global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Furthermore, after afforestation, estimated SOC is expected to increase above pre-LUC levels with 30 years lag. Estimated SOC sink from afforestation when compared to continuous cultivation varied depending on dominant tree species and soil fertility from between 0.19 Mg ha−1 y-1 (1.7‰ for spruce in medium fertile soil) to 0.46 Mg ha−1 y-1 (3.7‰ for silver birch in highly fertile soil). Future total soil and biomass carbon sink attributed to afforestation ranged between 1.65 and 2.44 Mg ha−1 y-1. Combined carbon sinks created by the present LUC could with 30 years lag offset annually between 0.01 and 4% of the present national net CO2 emissions in Finland. The long delay and a small scale of potential future carbon emission reduction by the LUC highlighted the importance of employing additional tools to reach the national neutrality targets due in next 15 or 30 years. In this study, we investigated growth and survival of Df seed sources to fill a knowledge gap regarding recommendations for the future use of Df provenances in Poland. Our experimental test site represents the most continental climate among all Df trials installed in the IUFRO 1966–67 test series in Europe. At this unique single site, we evaluated the performance of 46 Df provenances from North America, and nine local landraces of unknown origin. Repeated measurements of tree diameter, height, and volume were analysed, to age 48, representing integrated responses to geographic and climatic conditions. Significant variation in survival and productivity-related traits were found, with the interior Df provenances performing best, in contrast to previous European reports. The higher survivability and volume of the interior provenances resulted from their superior frost resistance. The low precipitation seasonality at the location of seed origin provided an additional advantage to the trees at the test site. Geographic and climatic factors of seed origin explained most of the variation in productivity (77 and 64%, respectively). The tested landraces exhibited diverse performance, implying that naturalized local seed sources in Poland need improvement and perhaps enrichment with new genetic material from North America, while considering geography and climate. Assisted migration programs should consider the limitations imposed by both frost and drought events in guiding future Df selections for continental climates. Further field testing, early greenhouse screening and DNA testing are also recommended. Terrestrial lidar scanning (TLS) is broadly used in temperate forest inventories, but its use in rainforests is restricted to the determination of individual tree volumes within small survey areas.
Aims : Mapping tree stems across one large (12-ha) rainforest plot, including trees less than 10 cm DBH, and evaluating the precision of traditional mapping approaches.
Methods : We used lightweight TLS, co-registered the acquisitions, and developed a new efficient algorithm to process the TLS data.
Results : We detected 36,422 stems of which 29,665 (81%) were Conclusion : Lightweight TLS technology is a promising tool for the estimation of stem tapering and volume.
