[Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) The three-dimensional (3-D) structure of forests, especially the vertical structure, is an important parameter of forest ecosystem modeling for monitoring ecological change. Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) provides scene reflectivity estimation of vegetation along elevation coordinates. Due to the advantages of super-resolution imaging and a small number of measurements, distribution compressive sensing (DCS) inversion techniques for polarimetric SAR tomography were successfully developed and applied. This paper addresses the 3-D imaging of forested areas based on the framework of DCS using fully polarimetric (FP) multibaseline SAR interferometric (MB-InSAR) tomography at the P-band. A new DCS-based FP TomoSAR method is proposed: a new wavelet-based distributed compressive sensing FP TomoSAR method (FP-WDCS TomoSAR method). The method takes advantage of the joint sparsity between polarimetric channel signals in the wavelet domain to jointly inverse the reflectivity profiles in each channel. The method not only allows high accuracy and super-resolution imaging with a low number of acquisitions, but can also obtain the polarization information of the vertical structure of forested areas. The effectiveness of the techniques for polarimetric SAR tomography is demonstrated using FP P-band airborne datasets acquired by the ONERA SETHI airborne system over a test site in Paracou, French Guiana. [Termes IGN] valeur économiqueRésumé : (auteur) Context : Evaluations of forest inventories usually end when accuracy and precision have been quantified.
Aims : We aim to value the accuracy of information derived from different remote sensing sensors (airborne laser scanning, aerial multispectral and hyperspectral imagery) and four alternative forest inventory approaches.
Methods : The approaches were (1) mean values or (2) diameter distributions both obtained by the area-based approach (ABA), (3) individual tree crown (ITC) segmentation and (4) an approach called semi-individual tree crown (SITC) segmentation. The estimated tree information was assessed and used to evaluate how erroneous inventory data affect economic value and loss due to suboptimal harvesting decisions. Field measured data used as reference come from 23 field plots collected in a study area in south-eastern Norway typical of managed boreal forests in Norway.
Results : The accuracy of the forest inventory was generally in line with previous studies. Our results show that using mean values from the area-based approach may yield large economic losses, while adding a diameter distribution to the area-based approach yielded less loss than the individual tree crown methods. Adding information from imagery had little effect on the results.
Conclusions : Taking inventory costs into account, diameter distributions from the area-based approach without additional information seems favourable.

[Termes IGN] théorie de Dempster-ShaferRésumé : (auteur) Land-use and land-cover change modeling helps us to understand the driving factors and impacts of human-induced land changes better, and depict likely future development paths. Uncertainty associated with various steps in the modeling process substantially influences the reliability of the results, but until now it has only rarely been addressed. In this study, we explore uncertainty in land-change modeling using a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian belief networks. We apply this approach to a case study of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and identify three modeling steps as sources of uncertainty: model structure, variable selection, and data preprocessing. For these three steps, we quantify the uncertainty and the respective impact on the outcome accuracy. The results indicate remarkable uncertainties in each of the steps. We demonstrate that a higher uncertainty in the land-change modeling process does not necessarily lead to a lower accuracy of the modeling outcome. Moreover, we show that the different uncertainty sources only slightly influence the ratio between quantity disagreement and allocation disagreement for the modeling outcome. We conclude that uncertainty is inherent in land-change modeling, and that future studies should address this uncertainty more explicitly to improve the robustness of modeling outcomes for science and decision-making. [Termes IGN] récepteur bifréquenceRésumé : (auteur) This paper describes a preliminary study on the image orientation acquired by a hyperspectral frame camera for applications in small tropical forest areas with dense vegetation. Since access to the interior of forests is complicated and Ground Control Points (GCPs) are not available, this study conducts an assessment of the altimetry accuracy provided by control targets installed on one border of an image block, simulating it outside a forest. A lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was equipped with a hyperspectral camera and a dual-frequency GNSS receiver to collect images at two flying strips covering a vegetation area. The assessment experiments were based on Bundle Block Adjustment (BBA) with images of two spectral bands (from two sensors) using several weighted constraints in the camera position. Trials with GCPs (presignalized targets) positioned only on one side of the image block were compared with trials using GCPs in the corners. Analyses were performed on altimetry discrepancies obtained from altimetry checkpoints. The results showed a discrepancy in Z coordinate of approximately 40 cm using the proposed technique, which is sufficient for applications in forests.
