[Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (Auteur) Knowledge of the spatial distribution of forest types in tropical regions is important for implementation of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), better understanding of the global carbon cycle, and optimal forest management. Frequent cloud cover in moist tropical regions poses challenges for using optical images to map and monitor forests. Recently, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) released a 50 m orthorectified mosaic product from the Phased Array Type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS). PALSAR data provides information about the land surface without cloud interference. In this study we use the fine beam dual (FBD) polarization PALSAR 50 m mosaic imagery and a Neural Network (NN) method to produce a land cover map in Hainan Island, China. Subsequently, forest areas are classified into evergreen and deciduous forests and rubber plantations are mapped using vegetation and land surface water indices derived from 250 to 500 m resolution MODIS products. The PALSAR 50 m forest cover map, MODIS-based forest types and rubber plantation maps are fused to generate fractional maps of evergreen forest, deciduous forest and rubber plantation within 500 m or 250 m pixels. PALSAR data perform well for land cover classification (overall accuracy = 89% and Kappa Coefficient = 0.79) and forest identification (both the Producer’s Accuracy and User’s Accuracy are higher than 92%). The resulting land cover maps of forest, cropland, water and urban lands are consistent with the National Land Cover Dataset of China in 2005 (NLCD-2005). Validation from ground truth samples indicates that the resultant rubber plantation map is highly accurate (the overall accuracy = 85%). Overall, this study provides insight on the potential of integrating cloud-free 50 m PALSAR and temporal MODIS data on mapping forest types and rubber plantations in moist tropical regions. [Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The electronically steerable flash lidar (ESFL) is a waveform lidar sensor that incorporates two advances relevant to the design of future spaceborne lidar sensors. The first is a nonmechanical scanner that splits a single incoming beam into a variable number of output beams that can be aligned independently across track; the transmitted beam pattern can be changed up to 60 Hz. The second is a flash focal plane array (FFPA) capable of recording waveforms simultaneously from a 128 x 128 pixel grid with individual footprints spread over multiple pixels. In this paper, the incoming beam was used to illuminate eight 8.4-m footprints which were imaged simultaneously on 12 x 12 pixel subsets of the FFPA. The FFPA digitizes waveforms at a vertical resolution of 75 cm over 41 vertical bins to create waveforms of 30.75-m depth. Multiple waveforms obtained using range-gating were combined for these analyses. ESFL data were collected at Manitou Experimental Forest (MEF), located in the Pikes Peak National Forest, Colorado, USA and the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest (AEF), located in the Angelina Forest, Nacogdoches, TX. We evaluated the use of individual pixel-level and aggregated footprint-level waveforms and alternate approaches to define the extent of each footprint in the focal plane array. Using discrete return lidar data as a reference, we evaluated the ability of ESFL lidar to estimate canopy height and compared the two sensors' rates of penetration to the terrain surface. We found the footprint-level waveforms were better suited for use with existing waveform processing techniques, although techniques for processing at the pixel-level appear feasible. Relationships between height estimates from each lidar data set were most closely related when footprint-level ESFL waveforms were calculated after removing pixels that had less than 50% of the maximum energy within that footprint. Regressions between ESFL and reference lidar data estimates - f height explained 84% (AEF) and 85% (MEF) of variance; this study could not say definitively which method yielded the more accurate estimate of height. [Termes IGN] zone intertropicaleRésumé : (Auteur) The study examined the capability of dual-polarization SAR data for forest cover mapping and change assessment in the Brazilian Amazon Forest regions. Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR)-C and Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS PALSAR) data were analysed to map and quantify deforestation. The images were classified using hybrid classifier, where each land cover was grouped in various spectral sub-classes interpreted on the imagery and later merged together to generate the desired land cover classes. The classification accuracy for forest was reasonably high (>90%). The technique applied in this study can be extended for operational mapping and monitoring of deforestation in the tropics, particularly for those regions which are often covered by cloud. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Estimation of soil loss using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (rusle) has long been an active research topic, but its application in a large area is a challenge due to data availability and quality. In this study, the RUSLE model was used to evaluate soil erosion risk based on soil samples, a soil type map, digital elevation model (dem) data, and Landsat Thematic Mapper (tm) images. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify major factors influencing soil erosion risks. A regression model based on DEM-derived slope gradient and TM-derived fractional soil and vegetation images was developed to map soil erosion risk distribution in a forest ecosystem in Zhejiang, China. The developed method has the potential to quickly examine spatial distri-bution of soil erosion risks. This study provides a new insight for evaluating soil erosion risks in forest ecosystems with the integration of remote sensing and GIS.
