[Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a generic scheme to extract traffic information from both optical satellite imagery and optical airborne image sequences. The extraction is based on an explicit semantic model of traffic, from which, depending on the characteristics of the input data, different strategies for vehicle detection, vehicle queue extraction and motion estimation are derived. The model comprises different scales to exploit the scale-dependent properties of traffic imaged by optical sensors. It is furthermore extended by context information to include knowledge about background objects as well as metadata from a road database in a consistent way. Various tests with different input data have been carried out and compared with manually acquired ground truth data of vehicles and vehicle tracks. The results show clearly the high potential of airborne and spaceborne traffic monitoring, but also indicate room for methodological improvements and exhibit some inherent sensor-related drawbacks. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The extended 9-intersection matrix is used to formalize topological relations between uncertain regions while it is designed to satisfy the requirements at a concept level, and to deal with the complex regions with broad boundaries (CBBRs) as a whole without considering their hierarchical structures. In contrast to simple regions with broad boundaries, CBBRs have complex hierarchical structures. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the complex hierarchical structure and to represent the topological relations between all regions in CBBRs as a relation matrix, rather than using the extended 9-intersection matrix to determine topological relations. In this study, a tree model is first used to represent the intrinsic configuration of CBBRs hierarchically. Then, the reasoning tables are presented for deriving topological relations between child, parent and sibling regions from the relations between two given regions in CBBRs. Finally, based on the reasoning, efficient methods are proposed to compute and derive the topological relation matrix. The proposed methods can be incorporated into spatial databases to facilitate geometric-oriented applications. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Topological relationships like overlap, inside, meet, and disjoint uniquely characterize the relative position between objects in space. For a long time, they have been a focus of interdisciplinary research as in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, linguistics, robotics, and spatial reasoning. Especially as predicates, they support the design of suitable query languages for spatial data retrieval and analysis in spatial database systems and geographical information systems. While, to a large extent, conceptual aspects of topological predicates (like their definition and reasoning with them) as well as strategies for avoiding unnecessary or repetitive predicate executions (like predicate migration and spatial index structures) have been emphasized, the development of robust and efficient implementation techniques for them has been largely neglected. Especially the recent design of topological predicates for all combinations of complex spatial data types has resulted in a large increase of their numbers and stressed the importance of their efficient implementation. The goal of this article is to develop correct and efficient implementation techniques of topological predicates for all combinations of complex spatial data types including two-dimensional point, line, and region objects, as they have been specified by different authors and in different commercial and public domain software packages. Our solution consists of two phases. In the exploration phase, for a given scene of two spatial objects, all topological events like intersection and meeting situations are summarized in two precisely defined topological feature vectors (one for each argument object of a topological predicate) whose specifications are characteristic and unique for each combination of spatial data types. These vectors serve as input for the evaluation phase which analyzes the topological events and determines the Boolean result of a topological predicate (predicate verification) or the kind of topological predicate (predicate determination) by a formally defined method called nine-intersection matrix characterization. Besides this general evaluation method, the article presents an optimized method for predicate verification, called matrix thinning, and an optimized method for predicate determination, called minimum cost decision tree. The methods presented in this article are applicable to all known complete collections of mutually exclusive topological predicates that are formally based on the well known nine-intersection model. [Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, an approach to the automatic quality assessment of existing geo-spatial data is presented. The necessary reference information is derived automatically from up-to-date digital remotely sensed images using image analysis methods. The focus is on the quality assessment of roads as these are among the most frequently changing objects in the landscape. In contrast to existing approaches for quality control of road data, the data to be assessed and the objects extracted from the images are modelled and processed together. A geometric-topologic relationship model for the roads and their surroundings is defined. Context objects such as rows of trees support the quality assessment of road vector data as they may explain gaps in road extraction. The extraction and explicit incorporation of these objects in the assessment of a given road database give stronger support for or against its correctness. During the assessment existing relations between road objects from the database and extracted objects are compared to the modelled relations. The certainty measures of the objects are integrated into this comparison. Normally, more than one extracted object gives evidence for a road database object; therefore, a reasoning algorithm which combines evidence given by the extracted objects is used. If the majority of the total evidence argues for the database object and if a certain amount of this database object is covered by extracted objects, the database object is assumed to be correct, i.e. it is accepted, otherwise it is rejected. The procedure is embedded into a two-stage graph-based approach which exploits the connectivity of roads and results in a reduction of false alarms. The algorithms may be incorporated into a semi-automatic environment, where a human operator only checks those objects that have been rejected. The experimental results confirm the importance of the employed advanced statistical modelling. The overall approach can reliably assess the roads from the given database, using road and context objects which have been automatically extracted from remotely sensed imagery. Sensitivity analysis shows that in most cases the chosen two-stage graph-approach reduces the number of false decisions. Approximately 66% of the road objects have been accepted by the developed approach in an extended test area, 1% has been accepted though incorrect. Those false decisions are mainly related to the lack of modelling road junction areas.
