[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) systems are effective ways to capture the 3D information of forests from complementary perspectives. Registration of the two sources of point clouds is necessary for various forestry applications. Since the forest point clouds show irregular and natural point distributions, standard registration methods working on geometric keypoints (e.g., points, lines, and planes) are likely to fail. Hence, we propose a novel method to register the ALS and TLS forest point clouds through density analysis of the crowns. The proposed method extracts mode-based keypoints by the mean shift method and aligns them by maximum likelihood estimation. Firstly, the differences in the point densities of the ALS and TLS crowns are minimized to produce analogous modes, which represent the local maxima of the underlying probability density function (PDF). The mode-based keypoints are then aligned through the coherent point drift (CPD) algorithm, which is independent of the descriptor similarities and considers the alignment as a maximum likelihood estimation problem. The sets of keypoints derived from the two data sources need not be equal. Finally, the recovered transformation is applied to the original point clouds and refined through the standard iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. In contrast to some of the existing methods, the proposed method avoids the geometric description of the forest point clouds. Furthermore, additional information such as tree diameter or height is not required to evaluate the similarities. The experiments in this study were conducted in a Scandinavian boreal forest, located in Evo, Finland. The proposed method was tested on four datasets (ALS data: a circle with a diameter of 60 m, multi-scan TLS data: 32 × 32 m) with heterogeneous tree species and structures. The results showed that the proposed probabilistic-based method obtains a good performance with a 3D distance residual of 0.069 m, and improved the accuracy of the registration when compared with the existing methods. [Termes IGN] sentierRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study was to evaluate image-based procedures for monitoring cross-border foot trails in the US - Mexico border zone in eastern San Diego County using airborne remote sensing techniques. Specifically, digital multi-spectral and multi-temporal imagery from an airborne digital multi-spectral imaging system, digital image processing, and visual image analysis techniques were explored in the context of detecting and delineating new trail features and updating trail GIS layers. Three trail updating approaches: map-to-image (M-I) overlay, map and image-to-image (M/I-I) differencing, map and image-to-image (M/I-I) swiping and two types of spectral transform, PCA and NDVI, were tested and compared. The M-I overlay was found to be the most reliable trail updating approach. The optimal image enhancement method for the M-I overlay approach varied with vegetation structure. PCA imagery yielded better results than NDVI imagery in a highly disturbed area and NDVI imagery performed better in a densely vegetated area. The M/I-I swiping approach was useful for distinguishing misregistered extant trails from new trail features. [Termes IGN] système de référence géodésiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Vertical elevation relative to mean sea level is a critical variable for the productivity and stability of salt marshes. This research classified a high spatial resolution Airborne Data Acquisition and Registration (ADAR) digital camera image of a salt marsh landscape at North Inlet, South Carolina, USA using an artificial neural network. The remote sensing-derived thematic map was cross-referenced with Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) elevation data to compute the frequency distribution of marsh elevation relative to tidal elevations. At North Inlet, the median elevation of the salt marsh dominated by Spartina alterniflora was 0.349m relative to the North American Vertical Datum 1988 (NAVD88), while the mean high water level was 0.618m (2001 to May, 2003) with a mean tidal range of 1.39m. The distribution of elevations of Spartina habitat within its vertical range was normal, and 80% of the salt marsh was situated between a narrow range of 0.22 m and 0.481 m. Areas classified as Juncus marsh, dominated by Juneus roemerianus, had a broader, skewed distribution, with 80% of the distribution between 0.296 m and 0.981 m and a median elevation of 0.519 m. The Juneus marsh occurs within the intertidal region of brackish marshes and along the upper fringe of salt marshes. The relative elevation of the Spartina marsh at North Inlet is consistent with recent work that predicts a decrease in equilibrium elevation with an increasing rate of sea-level rise and suggests that the marshes here have not kept up with an increase in the rate of sea-level rise during the last two decades. [Termes IGN] simulation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Sudden Oak Death is caused by a newly discovered virulent pathogen (Phytophthora ramorum) that is killing thousands of native oak trees in California. We present a landscape-scale study on the spatio-temporal dynamics of oak mortality. Second-order spatial point-pattern analysis techniques (Ripley's K) were applied to the distribution of dead tree crowns (derived from high-resolution imagery) in Marin County, California to determine the existence and scale of mortality clustering in two years (2000 and 2001). Both years showed clustering patterns between 100 and 300 m. A classification tree model was developed to predict spatial patterns of risk for oak mortality based on several landscapescale variables. Proximity to forest edge was the most important explanatory factor, followed by topographic moisture index, proximity to trails, abundance of Umbellularia californica, and potential summer solar radiation. This research demonstrates the utility of integrating remotely sensed imagery analysis with geographic information systems and spatial modeling for understanding the dynamics of exotic species invasions. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Classification errors using texture are most likely associated with class edges, but investigators often avoid edges when evaluating textures for classification. The large window needed to produce a stable texture measure produce large edge effects. Small windows minimize edge effects, but often do not provide stable texture measures. Simulated data experiments showed that class separability increased when texture was used in addition to spectral information. Texture separability improved with larger windows. This improvement was over estimated when pixels were chosen away from class edges. Airborne Data Acquisition and Registration (ADAR) data showed that separability of class interiors improved with the addition of texture, but that, for the whole class, separability fell. Maximum-likelihood classification of the ADAR data demonstrated the effect of edges and multiple scales in reducing the accuracy of classification incorporating texture.
