[Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (auteur) In the context of 3D building model production or updating, the models have to be manually checked one by one by a human operator in order to ensure their quality. In this paper, we investigate a new approach to perform a quality self-diagnosis of building models in dense urban areas from high resolution aerial images. Hence, we aim at reliably identifying roof facets that do not comply with quality specifications. The self-diagnosis process will highlight potential incorrect facets for their inspection by a human operator. A set of calibrated aerial images enable us to collect positive or negative evidences of roof facet existence and consistency. A particular attention has been paid to the definition of a set of low-level, complementary, robust and consistent image processing measures. Four quality classes have been defined and are used to classify roof facet quality. A supervised classifier and robust decision rules are then applied to perform an effective self-diagnosis according to the traffic light paradigm. Finally, the work in progress leads to a promising quantitative and qualitative evaluation in the context of dense urban areas. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainIndex. décimale : 30.60 Géodésie spatiale Résumé : (Auteur) This report deals with research work how digital terrain models can automatically be checked and improved. Test material consisting of three DTMs of different acquisition methods has been prepared, and six research groups applied their methods with the delivered DTMs. The provided imagery is suitable for the production of orthoimages and serves also as auxiliary material for the checking and improving of DTMs. The results of the participants were analyzed by means of accurate reference material with regard to accuracy. Furthermore, the completeness and degree of automation at the different methods have been evaluated.
The report describes in detail the delivered test material, the characteristics of the different methods, the strategy in the evaluation including the applied accuracy measures. The improving of DTMs is also possible to a large extent. A thematic map can give a quick overview where additional measure-ments are required. The applied methods are compared by means of the accuracy measures derived both from the delivered material and from the accurate reference data of the pilot centre. One method, which derives correction for the delivered DTM by means of parallaxes between two over-lapping orthoimages, was applied to all test areas and achieved the best results. The three DTMs could be tested with an accuracy of Oj,=0.015% of the flying height. Proposals for future practical work and further investigations are given. The results of this investigation will also be disseminated in educational seminars and e-learning courses of the EuroSDR. The contributions of the participating research groups are attached in the appendix of the report. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Soil colour carries important information regarding the soil's chemical and physical properties. However, common practices for measuring soil colour, either by Munsell charts or by field/laboratory spectrometers, are insufficient, due to the subjective and nonquantitative character of the Munsell charts, and to the high cost and inconvenience of field spectrometers. We present herein, a method to characterize the colour of soil samples, and related chemical and physical properties of the soil, using a digital camera, and an array of coloured plastic chips, that are used for calibration purposes. Using 370 samples of sandy soils, we have demonstrated that both RGB values from digital images and their derived soil indices, correlate highly with similar measurements performed by a field spectrometer. When checked against free iron oxide content and against the percentage of fine particles in a subsample set of 42 soils, the redness index as measured by the digital camera gave similar or better correlations than those obtained from a field spectrometer, against both free iron oxides and fine particle contents (R2 of 89% for the iron oxides, and of for the fine particles). We propose the use of a digital camera as a field analytical tool to determine precisely: soil colour, iron oxide and fine particle content. Further study in this direction, with other soil population and more soil properties, is strongly advised in order to launch this as a vastly applicable and generic method. Ultimately, the goal is to quantify the role of floodplains for partitioning water and ,sediment fluxes over the great fluvial basins of the world. SAR images are used to identify the type of surface (open water, inundated areas, forest) and, hence, the areas covered with water. Both radar altimetry data and in-situ hydrographic measurements yield water level time series. The basin of the Negro River, the tributary which carries the largest discharge to the Amazon River, was selected as a test site. By combining area estimates derived from radar images classification with changes in water level, variations of water volume (focusing on a seasonal cycle) have been obtained. The absence of relationship between water volume and inundated area, reflecting the diverse and widely dispersed floodplains of the basin, is one of the main result of this study.
